Illinois was the better team that day. A player like Coleman Hawkins clearly present problems for TJ's/Green's no-middle
These things don't operate in a vacuum. A coach at IU is going to deal with a line donors expecting access and influence in exchange for their $upport. NIL has only made that worse. That's going to create difficulties handling locker-room culture that TJ clearly puts a priority on
To derail this thread even further, wasn't Jefferson "signed" due to being a similar body and to play a similar role once Hadley was a No? I hadn't really thought about him till you mentioned, but, interestingly, they are basically the same player on paper this seasonYou’re assuming that he doesn’t deal with that sh*t at Iowa State, at least on some level?
Priority #1 will always be getting the players he wants. Wherever he is. Hadley was a major priority for the staff last spring.
Nothing is a sure thing. The point is that he can win a national championship at ISU and has the program rolling. He doesn't need to leave ISU to win the ultimate prize at the college level. The opportunity to coach in the NBA would be hard to pass up.Why isn’t TJ guaranteed to succeed at IU, but can win a title at ISU?
Is it their 2x to 3x NIL budget?
Everyone that is connected will tell you we need to increase our support to compete for a title, aka retain coaches. It’s got to be old for this staff to go into the offseason bringing a knife to a gunfight
The staff would have killed (not literally) to have them both. We absolutely had to do whatever it took to get Jefferson after the Hadley situation. To derail this thread even further, wasn't Jefferson "signed" due to being a similar body and to play a similar role once Hadley was a No? Is the NBA even all that for coaching? Theres been quite a few coaches who seem to never even look at coaching there and have had whole careers at the college level.Nothing is a sure thing. The timing made it seem like Jefferson was the backup to Hadley, but I don't think we've had confirmation of that, and posters here have alluded that both might have been a possibility. To derail this thread even further, wasn't Jefferson "signed" due to being a similar body and to play a similar role once Hadley was a No? NIL has changed a lot. There's more roster turnover in CBB than the NBA now. At least there is a cap in the NBA. I also think guys that consider themselves good x and o head coaches are intrigued by the challenge. Success could lead you in a path like Brad Stevens. Depends on which job it is too.Is the NBA even all that for coaching? Theres been quite a few coaches who seem to never even look at coaching there and have had whole careers at the college level.
Who's the last guy that really had IU rolling? Cream had a few good team but Kelvin Sampson was the last guy that had a legit top 10 team there. Eric Gordon team.We can fabricate all sorts of ways TJ wouldn’t work at a place like IU. Having too much funding and support is one of the more entertaining.
But that’s fan fiction. No coach with championship aspirations wants to be needing to turn straw into gold. It’s fair to say TJ wants more financial support in order to compete at the level he desires.
I don’t think he leaves, but that’s assuming the aforementioned fan fiction isn’t prevalent, and we do what’s needed to keep him.

Personally, while there are some similarities, I don’t believe they’re the same exact player, and they would have worked really, really well together on the floor at the same time.
Also just an opinion - I think the staff would have LOVED to get William Kyle, also.
I see. I really couldn't remember. I strictly meant that the two have almost the same statistics this season, not that they're interchangeable or we shouldn't keep in mind why Hadley decided to go elsewhere. I just find the statistical similarity interesting in a counterintuitive sense, given that they aren't the same type of player. As others have pointed out, this is why Otz may well leave eventually—think about how good the team may have been with both guys. I can't say the *roster* would've been any worse than Auburn's or Duke's.The timing made it seem like Jefferson was the backup to Hadley, but I don't think we've had confirmation of that, and posters here have alluded that both might have been a possibility.
They're the same player in the sense that either could have started at the 4 for Iowa State this season. But Hadley is more of a 3/4 at 6'6" and a better three point shooter, while Jefferson is more of a 4/5 at 6'8" with more of a post game.
Because of those differing skills, I think they could have coexisted perfectly fine. If both would have come, I'd bet that half or more of Jefferson's minutes would have come at the 5 spot with both Jackson and Chatfield's minutes going down while Hadley would have mostly played the 4, with some minutes at the 3 in big lineups.
Sounds vaguely familiar. I seem to remember games there on TV in that era having some really wonky camera angles. It's just a weird arena all around. Except for the crowd noise, which is good. Not Hilton good though.Watching games on tv back in the 80s was awful. They had that off center shot where the camera was seemingly at courtside and you couldn’t tell what was going on. Was I dreaming that?
I think it is. It's the best league in the world. It may not be the goal when coaches start but once the opportunity comes I think it's tough to pass up. Especially if you go to a decent organization. Coaches are ego maniacs. The reason a lot of big name coaches have passed it up is they had offers from bad teams. There's not a coach in college basketball that would turn down say the Lakers jobIs the NBA even all that for coaching? Dan Hurley just did this past offseason.I think it is. It's the best league in the world. It may not be the goal when coaches start but once the opportunity comes I think it's tough to pass up. If this happens I vote you're banned.Heard TJis going to Iowa, and Fran is the new coach at ISU.![]()
As did Jay Wright several years agoDan Hurley just did this past offseason.
That's true I forgot about that saga. Dan Hurley is a ****. Okay it actually doesn't surprise me he'd turn it down. He's not what id call a players coach. I do think you have to be a players coach to reasonably believe you'd have any success at that levelDan Hurley just did this past offseason.
If he does, I will change my name to Frantastic! If this happens I vote you're banned.
I like Franny Pack better. If he does, I will change my name to Frantastic!![]()
