Since the other thread was closed - here's my thoughts on this basketball game. Please keep this thread on topic.

This game will come down to 3 factors - Turnovers, Rebounds and Free Throws

Turnovers:
- both ends of the court are key - but especially when Miss has the ball. They are elite at not turning it over - and we need force them to be uncomfortable. We won't force 15+ TOs, but if we can get a couple runouts, it would be ideal. We also need to not have careless turnovers - we've been better the last couple games, but if we're sloppy they'll take advantage

Rebounds:
- they are a bad rebounding team on both ends. We are up-and-down, but we need to force the issue. A lot of it has to do with effort and energy (Heise and Chatfield) and positioning (the Presidents). They are very undersized, especially when Dia is out of the game.

Free Throws:
- unlike Lipscomb, Miss put their opponents on the line a TON. This is a Jefferson/Jackson game to thrive. They need to get to the line - Malik Dia is their only player with size - and he's prone to fouling. We definitely need to pound it inside - and make our FTs.

They are very small - basically play 5 guards when Dia is out. They like to switch everything, which UNC was able to exploit for a bit when they make their comeback yesterday. I think this is a game where we can do a lot with switches to get mismatches for Jefferson and Milan, then clear out and let them work. If either can get Pedulla (6'1") or Murray (5'11") on them, it should be an automatic iso.

Other than the two undersized guards and Dia (6'9" 240#), everyone they play is roughly 6'5" and athletic.

They are a very average shooting team from both 3s and 2s, so making them work against our set defense is a key as well

All that said - the eternal CBB caveat is if a team shoots the 3 out of their minds, they'll probably win.

Captain obvious here but if our defense is sound I think this game is really winnable. Ole Miss can score quick but I think we have some good matchups, Jefferson should have a field day.

I think that the key is locking down Pedulla. He can take over a game. And, they’ll set a ton of high ball screens to get free so he can either shoot or drive and create. Control him and we win by 15-20. Let him get going and we probably lose.

Iowa State’s fully healthy roster that should’ve beaten the #1 overall seed was still at its best when it was attacking the rim. After all the twists and turns this season, that is still true. Yesterday was a master class in “We’re not here to f around, you’re tiny and we’re going to back you under the hoop for 2 hours.” I think Iowa State’s defense will be fine tomorrow. If they’re as laser focused on being aggressive offensively as yesterday they should win

So CW says one of their strengths is length when they play one guy 6.9 and the rest are 6.5 or less?
Maybe their roster all has some freakish wingspans, but they just aren’t a long team at all.

There top 5 min guys are 5’11, 6’1, 6’4, 6’6, and 6’8.

Whoever is on Pedulla cannot be part of trapping, he is their main threat from 3. If we limit him and force them to run an actual offense I believe we will win.

Murrell at 6'4" plays a lot bigger than that. Dude is built like a fridgen brick house. With that said, if this turns into a slower pace, halfcourt game, I love that Momcilovic and Jefferson are likely to have a height advantage. Lately we are posting them up and running our offense through them with high levels of succes.

Their off ball guard (Jaylen Murray) is listed as 5"11 and 165 pounds and that may be generous. Im not so sure that kid is 5'10". If CuJo has it rolling he should be able to get his shot all day over the smaller defender. Heise also needs to absolutely hammer the glass.

Its odd how much more confident (or way less concerned) many are about Miss'iss than our opener with a 14 seed.

they ran a set in the BYU conf tourney game that I think we'll see again, especially when Jefferson is playing the 5.

First they run a PNR with Lipsey and Jefferson, getting the switch of a little on Jefferson.

Then they run a high PNR with Jefferson and Milan, where Milan ends up posting the little at the FT line. The end result is that their smallest player is guarding Milan at the FT line and he goes to work.

Also, this is a definitely a team against which we'll press our advantage in the paint with Jackson/Chatfield for most of the game - but in crunch time we'll go small with Jefferson at the 5 so we can switch everything too.
