I think it's a smart move for him if he wants to have a good shot of playing. At ISU there's already two seniors on the perimeter who are going to average 25+ minutes per game, two or three incoming freshmen he'll be competing for minutes on the perimeter with, and probably at least one transfer, maybe more. Plus the walk-on who he couldn't beat out this year.

So the solution is just don't recruit a freshman and not try? For every Nojus or Omaha there is a Tamin or Milan where it works. Every player wants to play and should be able to find a good situation for them.
I don't know what the solution is. All i know is the hit rate is extremely low now on taking high school kids. It's basically you're either good enough at 18 or else you need to move on.

I guess if high school players decided to take the mid-major route first that would maybe help alleviate some of the talent discrepancy we are seeing now in the tournament, but the best will just leave in a year or 2 anyways. You'd basically end up in a system where 22 year olds in the Power 5 conferences are playing 18-19 year olds which doesn't accomplish much either.

Basketball is a game of runs and it’s rare to have 4 year players if they’re not significant contributors in years 1 & 2.

Things aren’t going back to how it used to be. Adapt or die. Or stop watching.

Best of luck to the kid. Early on in the season it felt like he was so close and was going to turn the corner any moment, but it just never happened. Hopefully it works out for him at his next stop.

Just stop taking any freshman at all. They either won't play or think they should and bolt. I hate what this sport had become, it's a shell of itself. I don't know why when 95% of people hate thus nobody will do anything about it.
Understand the frustration. The HS ranking off our recruits has probably never been better for Cyclone hoops.

It would be interesting how much the coaching staff actually watches HS players during AAU & HS seasons. 5-10 years ago it was a full time summer job for coaches to attend AAU events. Would be curious if coaches are watching more video and just attending events where there are kids they are highly interested. Also is AAU basketball still a meaningful development path?

IMO it's important for Big12 & ACC schools to recruit HS players from an NIL budget perspective. A solution might be to focus more on Prep School (Toure) vs. HS kids, Or ISU taking European players (Pleta). Another area is the number of African players that are part of NBA Development programs or at Prep Schools

The "solution" is to find and keep your core players. High school recruiting is used to try to find the next Lipsey, Momcilovic's. You take flyers on a few more high school kids, hoping they can quickly develop into a "core" player. You then supplement these core players with high quality transfers.

Most high school players won't be a "core" player. That's fine. When it is apparent they may be better suited in a different program, let them leave to pursue the playing time they need.

This is the main problem, how do you know things wont work out when neither side is giving the other side a chance anymore?
How often did grandpa leave those kids he stuck at Coffeyville hanging? Think he never had to tell a kid they aren't going to get the role they wanted?

Last years class was an anomaly only taking 1 freshman. I think you see 2 or 3 from our freshman class play next year, especially considering most of the Covid seniors being gone. It’s going to be a lot easier for freshman to contribute next year.

And like Blum said on the podcast, they are cheap and the money ball option.

He didn't look comfortable at all in the scant minutes he played last week. If Kelderman was in in front of him I have to assume that wasn't just a coincidence.

There are more players in the portal than ever and not everyone will get to go to a 'better' spot. I don't think there's anything wrong with guys testing and then staying, although would depend a lot on the conversations had in the background that we don't see.

Two freshmen last year, five in ‘23 I believe. You’re forgetting Pierce probably.

This is the 1st year we didn't have a freshman play impactful minutes.

We still need dudes in practice.

Nojus lost his spot to a walkon.

We still need to recruit freshman.
How did a player whose position is not PG lose to a player who is a PG, played PG in high school, and practiced as a PG? You do realize the positions require a different skills, abilities, and experience?
