ISU needs the House Settlement to get finalized. Once the athletic department can pay the players it will ease the burden on the fans and help even the playing field some (it will still be tilted, but should be better).

ISU has already said they won’t be able to pay anywhere close to the suggested max. And NIL will still be a thing. It may help in the short term, but most money is going to win. Cinderella is dying.

PS: Iowa is going to have struggles as well. Their fanbase is mostly bandwagon fans and tavernhoks who won’t donate. They’ll get way more TV money than us though.

I estimate there are only 250,000 alumni. Non-alumni are not going to donate. Some type of legislation is needed. Portal, NIL, network revenue sharing. I have already opted out on watching anything outside the big12. I can watch the NFL and NBA for that level of competition.

I think the alumni association said we are around 285,000 living alumni.

And I'm not sure it's ever been that much different for a long time.

We as fans want to think that the players bleed cardinal and gold and Ames, etc. and there's plenty that seem to really have a strong connection, but in the end it's still always been a transactional process and can probably be traced back to whenever players started hearing 'if you play here, you'll get a scholarship' (early 1900s).

My point is that we have WAAAAY more than 10,000 fans. Completely guessing here, but we probably have somewhere around 3/4 of a million fans across the Country. If even half of our fanbase gave $1 a month, we could nearly double our NIL budget. I know it's not easy to do, but small amounts from a large group can make a difference.

Go back and look what I said, not fans, but people willing and able to purchase season tickets or tickets to the game. Those are the one you have to hope will give NIL funds. They are already spending money by going to the games, so they have some commitment already for the program. We are not going to get a lot of "fans" that do not attend games to pony up and give money to NIL, and neither is any other school. We need a few large boosters willing to step up, and so far, that is not happening much.

Elite athletes want to win. I think you’re really underestimating the mindset of a high level athlete.

Also it will be about how the coaches develop players for the NBA/NFL and also the schools location and atmosphere.

There are very few college players drafted each year for the NBA. The majority of these guys are staying in school now for 4/5 years

Hell KSt broke the bank with NIL spending for their BB team and it amounted to nothing. Kansas spent through the roof and did no better than us.

I’m not referring to the NIL I’m referring to the player coming in early and why it makes sense. If he felt like he had a future at ISU and was developing then it makes sense for him to stay.

Guys want to win. It goes against all elite athletes natural tendencies to not care about winning. It’s why the best schools get the best talent. They are shown to put guys into the NBA and develop well.

Geez people are really upset over a kind of fun hypothetical thought experiment. National Championships in one of the top two sports are pretty amazing and I think it’s at least worth a thought.

I’m a big basketball guy I still wouldn’t. Mainly because the way the basketball national champion is chosen regardless of what you spent on roster it’s still a bit of a crap shoot who wins. If you could essentially lock up a guaranteed title I’d at least give it a thought

The success of the school and the likeability of the players are the reason the fans follow.
I'm not ready to pull the plug on my season tkts yet but next time we have a down trend it might be.

Even at the B1G/SEC $ levels are there schools that normally can't get things together on the football field go all in or put larger chunks towards basketball? Looking at places like Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers, Vanderbilt. I'd put Northwestern in this group too but they are building a new football stadium so I doubt they would consider short-changing that team.

NIL outside of the regular Joe type collectives will have their choice of what sport to fund.

I'm retired and debt-free. Cheap? Probably so. I pick up the dinner tab WAY more than my share bc I have cheapskate friends. But, I will never donate a penny to NIL. There are better causes then teenagers, many of whom will be getting paid major bucks under the House Settlement.

This is basically what I was saying and for some reason people thought I was being super offensive. Maryland just moved more money from football to basketball to appease the coach and he immediately bailed. I’m just saying at some point something is going to change for basketball type schools like ours. Would we rather take some money from football so we can compete better at basketball?
