Some old memories are like out-of-body experiences when I think back. Going through four years of college without the internet, smoking allowed everywhere (remember the smoking room in the Parks Library basement) and not owning my first cell phone until I was in my upper 20's just seem wild now.

Oh and I almost forgot our FULL SSN being our student ID number right there displayed on our student ID card as well as often on people's checks that they wrote and handed out everywhere.
I used to carry my student ID in my wallet, just for sentimental value. Had the old ISU logo and holes in it as it was also useable as a punchcard! Although I don't recall every using that feature.

Then I realized my SSN was on it and was like "uh, that would be bad to lose". Now its safely at home.

Such an innocent time way back in the day...

I have a permed mullet in the pic on mine. It was a glorious mullet though!

I carried mine in my wallet for quite a few years. When I lived in Lincoln they had a discount with a student ID at the movie theater so there I was a 27 year old flashing my student ID to get a couple of bucks off of my movie ticket. I lost it when my truck got broken into in the Adventureland parking lot soon after.

The last time I went to a Casey's in Iowa was in 2009 when I was still in college. It was great then, they had my pizza ready quick. Had Casey's breakfast pizza in Indiana when I visited Laporta and it was great. Is it the ones in Ames that are bad? Or in general?

In general...they don't seem to care about cleanliness much...and they must not pay their employees well because they definitely lack in the friendly customer service aspect!

According to quick CoPilot (payscale.com fueled) search

Caseys

As of 2025, the average hourly wage at Casey’s General Stores is about $13.29. That said, pay varies quite a bit depending on the role:
  • Cashiers typically earn between $10–$15/hour
  • Pizza makers and kitchen workers average around $12/hour
  • Assistant store managers can make up to $16–$19/hour
  • Warehouse workers and specialized roles like car wash technicians can earn $20–$32/hour

Kwikstar

As of 2025, Kwik Star employees in Iowa earn an average hourly wage ranging from $12.72 to $16.92, depending on the role. Here's a quick breakdown:
  • Cashiers: around $12.72/hour
  • Food service workers: typically $14–$15.82/hour
  • Assistant managers: up to $16.92/hour
  • Store managers: average about $61,582/year

Not exactly apples to apples but it does seem similar. Store culture and role expectations might vary widely though.

Who knows how accurate the search is, but its gotta be close.

Casey's gas sucks! Cost me $80 for Ames Outdoor Supply to tell me that the surging that was happening with my mower was due to water in the gas. I had drained the tank on it, let it dry out, took the carb off of it, took the bowl off, and took the air hose to it to dry everthing out. I also took the air hose to make sure the inner filter in the tank was clean. Went and got unleaded gas (no blend) 88 octane, at our nearby Casey's, in the empty fuel canister that I made sure it was dried out, a few weeks ago. WTF?? I guess I'll add some Seafoam to the rest of the canister it to ensure it doesn't happen again.

All of the gas stations near me(CR) with 88 state that it is blended with ethanol(up to 15%) so that may be part of your issue. 87 is up to 10% ethanol. The only one that does not have ethanol is the 91 typically. I do not buy gas at Casey's though after consistently getting worse fuel economy using their gas. YMMV

lol - my 16 year old makes just over $16/hr at Subway. Karens better lower their expectations of a "manager" at a gas station, cause they ain't paid to do much managing.

So my mower is still surging after putting Premium in from my nearby Casey’s. Toro dealer is still thinking there is water in the gas. Tomorrow I’m getting a gallon at Sam’s club. Then we will see if Casey’s really does have bad gas or if the Toro dealer is feeding me a line of BS!!

Most of them aren't near as bad as people are making them seem, but there are a few bad ones around. The biggest problem is KwikStar/trip from Wi has moved in and they kick *ss and are a great convenience store.

Exactly. There would be no reason to go to a Casey's if your town has a Kwik Star as Kwik Star stores are far, far superior other than maybe pizza. My wife likes Kwik Star pizza a lot, but I'm meh on them. Everything else at Kwik Star is way better for sure though.
