Red-hot Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie?

My mom used to make a delicious rhubarb strawberry pie from her own garden. She also made a rhubarb cream pie that had a custard like filling. One of my favorite pies that she made that would seem unlikely because it sounds horrible, is a raisin cream pie. I hate raisins in almost anything, but she made it with a pudding-like filling with meringue on top. It was almost a Bavarian cream-like filling.

When we were kids, we always looked forward to the days she baked pies because she would always cut the leftover dough into strips, sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over them and bake them along with the pies. Us kids would fight over those crust strips.

My Mom made the same Raisin Cream (custard) pie with chiffon! She baked homemade bread on Wednesdays with cinnamon-sugar left over bread strips as an eagerly awaited prize side product. I wonder if it is ethnical or just a Boomer thing-I am mostly of German descent with Swiss/Swedish and other Eastern Euro bits.

My wife wanted to make a jello salad that her mom used to make for the holidays. I searched half a dozen stores to find the cinnamon red hots. HyVee, ALDI, and Fareway did not have them. I had to break down and go to Walmart. My view is strawberries ruin good rhubarb but my wife would want to try it.

Exactly, I couldn't find the mini-red hots so I had to settle for red hot lozenges. They are pretty much the same product and intend to crush them up.

I know i'm in the minority, but I can't stand that bright red, fake cinnamon stuff. Red hot candies, Big Red gum, even Fireball "whiskey"

I imagine that those are what Satan puts on your pillow in hell

One red dye gives me a headache, so I agree with you. The candy I bought is almost pink and perfect flavor so its what I am using.

I'm half Norwegian as both parents were half Norwegian. My grandma on my dad's side even came over on the boat as a young girl, so she was first generation in America. She spoke with a thick accent, despite living in the U.S. her whole adult life.

We owned our own restaurant at one time and my mother was the chief cook, so she knew how to cook. She made fresh pies daily at the restaurant.

My wife is close to 100% Norwegian and her mom's cooking was a bit different than my mother. I miss my mom's pies and it sounds like your memories are pretty special to you too. A small chain of nice restaurants in Wisconsin called the Norske Nook specializes in pies: https://norskenook.com/

I make a rhubarb strawberry chiffon pie. I just buy the graham cracker pie shells. Cool whip, cook rhubarb, strawberries, and sugar add jelatin and put in fridge for a couple hours. Fold the mixture into the cool whip and put in pie shells. You can freeze or put in fridge.

I'm a decent cook and have my own idea of how I would make the pie. So if you're interested I could post an original recipe.

Sounds good. I'll take a try too. My wife makes great crust but says no, "she's too busy." So its store bought.

I've talked to a pie maker and I am taking her suggestion start with a basic ingredients and experiement from there.

I’m fine with fireball, but I don’t care for the others you mentioned. If fireball was a drink, I wouldn’t drink it. But I’ll slug a shot or two.

One of my buddies, who grew up poor back in the days when poor meant poor... His favorite pie is sour cream raisin pie. I did try it and it was very good.

Though, I am not one of those "I think raisins are an abomination" guys. I like a cinnamon raisin bagel and even cinnamon raisin bread.

My mother made that, too. From posters here in pies is one of the few ways, they'd eat a raisin.

My mom made that once, my dad loved it. Most dreadful thing I ever tasted. My mom realiazed later that the recipe she got from her friend, the friend forgot to write down sugar. It was so bad that no one was willing to let her try again.

New to me and the best pie I can recall, with ice cream OMG. My wife got it from a friend who was helping with some old-fashioned bake sale. As the sale ended her friend made an offer for some remaining goods. Fortunately, the pie was one of the lot and we had no idea who baked it except a small label stating:"Red-hot Strawberry Rhubarb-made with strawberry, rhubarb, and cinnamon candy red-hots." Crust was great, too.

Our neighbor is always gifting us rhubarb and if I had the recipe, I'd make it. Anyone heard of this, I see online recipes but afraid they may be different. Good recipe wanted or I'll go with my best guess.
That's an interesting twist. Regular strawberry rhubarb is my favorite. I might have to try this variant.

Raisin Cream pie was a favorite of my dad’s. He also really liked gooseberry pie. My great uncle used to say the way to ruin a pie is to cut it. Implying it is best to eat the whole thing. I come from a family of pie eaters. lol.

My favorite pie of my mom's was the raisin cream pie, but my favorite pie overall is a butterscotch pie they make in a restaurant where I live. Unfortunately, it's not a regular menu item.
