Iowa State has a long list of great runners and T&F athletes, including several Olympians. The latest is middle distance runner (sprinter) Rachel Joseph who is dominating the competition right now.

The only thing worse than running the 400 (full on sprint for full lap) is running the 800 (full on sprint for 2 laps).

I see your 800 and raise you the 400 hurdles.

Rachel has run the 30 fastest times in the 400m event in ISU history. I am anxious to see if she can finally break 50 seconds at NCAA. The key is to make it to the final, which won't be easy. I have her slotted to finish somewhere between 4th- 6th next week.

Rachel has a classmate that runs the 800m named Makayla Clark. Makayla runs around 2:01 for the distance and is painfully close to the ISU record. A good national meet for Makayla would be to qualify to the finals in the event and see what happens.

The 4x400 relay for the women will feature both individuals as well. This event really has not been run at full strength yet this season and has the ability to make the finals with the correct draw. A really interesting ISU strategy going back to Martin Smith is to run the fastest member of the relay team on the 2nd leg to stay in the race. While the relay cannot be won on the 2nd leg, it can be lost. Joseph will run the 2nd leg to keep us in contact with the fastest teams and Makayla will anchor the relay team.

My oldest son who was an 800 runner will disagree with that. 400 hurdles is the worst of all in his opinion. He ran both of those.

I personally have never even attempted hurdles so have no opinion on them. Just running without jumping.

ISU's best chances for winning next week are probably
1) Robin Bera or Sanele Masondo in the mens 10k. Habtom Samuel from New Mexico is the favorite
2) Joash Ruto in the steeplechase. I believe he finished 3rd last year but the field is crazy good this season.
3) Rachel in the 400m
4) The womens distance team is really good. BYU has a star named Jane Hedengren that will be the favorite in the 5k and 10k. Pam Kosgei from New Mexico is the other favorite. Betty Kipkore and Mercyline Kirwa will make serious noise for ISU

They are a mindf*ck because you see them and think "oh it can't be that bad". Oh its bad. It's really, really bad. The only time have ever vomited from running was every time I ran 400h.
