Jack Kohnen committed to Iowa State!!!

In the current transfer portal era it's hard to get too excited about HS recruiting. Gotta get the guys on campus then actually see them contribute on the court too. Omaha Beilew is a perfect example of this as many here were worried he'd be a 1 or 2 year guy then off to the NBA. That didn't turn out well and we had a couple other classes that didn't quite pan out either.

That being said it is pretty cool to see ISU currently at the top of the 247 2027 class recruiting ranks. TJ's staff does a good job, we saw it this year with Toure and Batemon being big contributors and Lipsey and Milan also guys TJ brought in. Not every HS recruiting class will pan out in this era but its awesome to see us as major players at the level we have lately.

Regarding expectations, I recognize Biliew was a bust based on his recruiting rating/ranking. What stands out to me is Otz has pretty clearly been willing to pivot his strategy multiple times in just five seasons. After big Rob, he tried opting for even more size and mass in the post. But after it became clear that post players of a certain size can’t do what’s needed in his (and Green’s, and Blount’s) defensive system, he pivoted back to more-mobile bigs

Now, with Toure, Batemon, Bond, Singleton, Davis, and Kohnen, I think you’re seeing yet another pivot to a player profile of the exact athleticism and, more importantly, offensive versatility that some here have complained Iowa State lacks relative to its competitors. No, not every newcomer they bring in will have the career trajectory of Jefferson and Momcilovic. But watch the best college teams and the NBA. If you bring in enough guys that fit that mold, some will hit, and over time your program shouldn’t be far off from those models
