Jack Kohnen committed to Iowa State!!!

The thing that concerns me isn't the guard or wing play. We're swimming in pretty deep waters now. As in, we are shooting for Final Fours. When you get that deep into the tournament, you are going to run into elite size. Tennessee bodied us. Maybe we beat them with Jefferson, maybe not, but we were absolutely not beating Michigan. I guess my concern is if you are playing a team with a front line of 6'9, 7'0, 6'10 and your front line is 6'6, 6'10, 6'7, that's a problem. Tough situation to be in, because we need guys that are mobile enough to switch, bring the double, retreat to stop the lob. And big guys that can do those things are few and far between...especially guys that have some offensive skill.

How many teams have this kind of front line along with the athletes Michigan had?

That's going to be tough for about any program.

Not sure how they land one but imo ISU has missed having just one athletically elite guy with 'bounce' that can get about anywhere on both ends and find a bucket in a drought.

The champion doesn't always have that kink size. Baylor won it all with 4 starters under 6'6".

True. I think a lot of fans (me included to an extent) have a recency-sting because ISU happened to face a big/long underdog, without our key inside prevents, so there’s an urge to rethink our roster construction to get more size.

A team can have lots of size then run into a quicker, smaller opponent or such and be at a disadvantage in a different way.

They still had size, and the Vital types that make your stat work are even more rare than traditional bigs.

So even with absolutely elite guard rotation, they still needed size at 6’8”, 6’10”, and 6’9” in the rotation, plus an absolute freak in Vital

If we can keep Singleton, Pleta, Davis, DRK for two years together, it’s a good start.

Not exactly? What would be so bad about a guy that at 23 averages close to a triple double in the NBA, and has never been the subject of any league discipline, arrests, criminal charges, convictions, or lawsuits?
Regardless of the lack of punishments or charges, I think it's fair to say that none of us would want Iowa State to have the kind of negative attention that Giddey had for a period of time.

The case was dropped due to the other party's lack of cooperation. That doesn't mean that Giddey didn't do anything wrong, or at least make some poor decisions.

Anyway, the Kohnen commit is exciting. Here's a video of him and Donovan Davis going up against each other. It's about a year and a half old, but it's fun to see two ISU commits face off. Seems like Kohnen generally had more highlight plays in this matchup, but it also sounds like Davis has developed a lot, so that makes sense for an older video.

He was a month past turning 21, met an (allegedly/unbeknownst to him) 17 year old girl at a nightclub, there was an investigation, police said they could not corroborate criminal activity, no charges were filed, and the NBA closed its investigation without punishment. I don't know how much can be blamed on Josh here.

Not going to lie, I came away from that video a little disappointed. He's not explosive at all and looks slow footed. I was expecting a little more athleticism. He has good size, but I don't see him being able to take a good Big 12 defender off the bounce. I guess I'll trust TJ and the recruiting rankings. You don't get that high without being really good at that position.

Yeah, I don't understand the pearl clutching, here. If this had been in Iowa, which has BOTH a 16 age of consent AND a Romeo and Juliet law, there would have been nothing to even investigate. But, unfortunately, this happened in California; a state that tries to control all aspects of life.

If you want to express outrage, here, do it towards the ridiculous laws in California.

These guys all have deficiencies. If he was an explosive athlete, with his shooting ability, he'd be a top 5-10 guy and probably not coming here.

I think he's a better athlete that Momcilovic and Matt Thomas.

Naz Long wasn't a great athlete, but got to the basket a lot later in his career just by being strong with the ball and attacking closeouts. I think Kohnen is quick enough to become a guy like that, and he's bigger than Naz.

He's taller. Naz was much more athletic and stronger, even as a freshman. There's no way Kohnen is getting to the hoop with the athleticism he has in that video. He looks slower than Momcilovic and if anything, I'd say less athletic than Thomas.

Kohnen to me looks like Milan with more advanced ballhandling and passing. Certainly not a bad thing, I was just a little surprised with those highlights.

If the video is a year and half old, then he was only a 10th grader at the time. I'd cut him some slack.

Naz was a freaking fantastic athlete. Laterally wasn't insane but he could jump out of the gym and his speed/burst was fantastic for his size.

I believe the original report, at least, was that he was 19 and she was 15 when it actually happened, and there was some discussion of whether it was a one-time thing or something that went on for a longer period of time. Either of those would change the situation quite a bit. But again, in these types of situations, if there is not cooperation from those parties, it's hard for any investigation to do much (see the Chris Beard domestic violence case getting dropped).

Anyway, this'll be my last post on it. I'm sorry to derail the thread somewhat. I was just trying to make a joke that I didn't think would generate any type of discussion.
