*** Cyclone Fanatic Fast Food Tournament Sweet 16 ***

No Cane's, McD's, No Taco Bell, Shake Shack, Wing Stop, Chipotle? But somehow A&W made it in for consideration?

Nostalgia for root beer floats.

All those other places are 100% replaceable - there are substitutes. No sub for A&W.

FWIW, I actually ate at one in Eau Claire a few months ago and it was surprisingly delicious. Went for the float, but the burger was outstanding.

We were big on A&W being a treat growing up. My parents actually just asked if I wanted the mugs we got back then because there is some nostalgia behind them. Doing the math it looks like these are from around 1994.

Anyone else remember the lore of the 1/3 pounder? Also they’ve got the dumbass and dumbass commercial.

Can’t remember who they were up against, but Chinese is one of those things where I far prefer seeking out a local shop, so I don’t really feel compelled to seek out Panda.

Personal preference, and you can argue the same thing for pretty much all of these.
I would rather eat a local shop too but when in a hurry and need a fast Chinese kick Panda is a goto. I prefer it over Hy-Vee Chinese even. Getting orange chicken with chow mein noodles from the Panda in the MU was a staple back in college too.

It's just like saying you can get a better burger by going to a local burger restaurant too, Panda is just the fast food version of what a fast food burger is too or a Taco Bell or John's is to Mexican food.

All three are trailing now, rightfully so.

I'm surprised to see Arby's taking Sonic to the woodshed.

DQ/Chick-Fil-A and Culver's/B-Bop's are shaping up to be good matchups to watch

Sonic has never really taken off here in IA. When I lived in TX Sonic was everywhere and they were awesome. The ones here are good but it's crazy how poorly they are supported.

The thing with A&W's is that there are different types of stores with completely different menus. The old school franchise restaurants are freaking great. Same can be said with DQ.

As I wrote before, Sonic has never given me a decent amount of quality food AND quality service in the same visit. Ever. I quit going about 15 years ago. And the local one shut down after about 3 years in business.

B-Bops is not anywhere close. I think I may have tried it about 20 years ago in Des Moines, but have no memory of it good or bad. So I by default vote for the other option. Same with In-N-Out.

Is In-N-Out the junior high humor version for fast food that Kum and Go was for convenience stores?

Arbys is hella underrated. Sonic has the ice cream down but Arbys has the food by a mile.
The new box meal is a great deal. $7.99 for a crispy chicken sandwich + curly fries (or any potato side) + two mozzarella sticks + a peach cobbler roll + a small drink

Best value anywhere IMO

DQ and A&W are not places where people go eat a meal. They are predominately dessert or treat kinda places.

I am shocked A&W is still in this. I haven't even seen one of them in 40 years, let alone eaten at one.

I remember the one in Ames 50 years ago, where you had to phone in your order from the booth. I remember back then there was the Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear burgers (or something along those lines). There's one just around the corner from my office. Maybe I need to head over for lunch sometime.

That's fair. I've been outta state for 30 years. I've never eaten at B-Bops, so I don't have an opinion on them at all.

Besides their drinks, Sonic's one selling point for me is that I've never really had poor food there. Poor service - yes, but the food I've gotten has generally been equal to or better than what I'd expect for fast food. One caveat: once I realized that their fries suck (and they do suck), I just get tots or rings and am better off doing so.

Just my two cents but B-Bops has the best basic double cheeseburger in the DSM metro. I will say some locations are better than others and the Urbandale restaurant on Meredith is consistently really good.
