Purely 100% biased but really: How on a beautiful sunny day does a high school student on a campus tour not walk away from Iowa State University and think to themselves...... yep that's where I'm going?
Everything the Office of Admissions does is centered on trying to get the prospective student (especially the non-resident prospective student) and their family members to visit campus. Their research shows the chances of enrolling go up dramatically after the campus visit.

It's no different when it comes to our athletic recruiting.

When you lived at Towers and had a 2 hour break between classes and found one of those big comfy chairs on the second level of the library available in wintertime with the sun shining through the glass and you just curl up like a cat for a decent nap. The Terrace Room at the Union (can't remember what it was called--the one that had the piano in it) overlooking the fountain was a good place to try and get a nap as well, but much noisier.

The old Trophy Tavern was a smoker's lounge and full of vending machines with anything to get you through the day. I have the large portrait of Cy leaning on the MU that was centered on the west wall with smaller portraits of the other Big 8 mascots on either side. When the Union was renovated in 95 I discovered it in the dumpster and asked if I could have it. One of my most prized possessions.

For sports are athletes more inclined to commit because of campus and facilities, or just the campus?

Graduated 19 years ago. Loved that path between Beardshear and Curtiss. Loved just how cool those buildings are. Recently just showed my kids the MU, they thought it was cool.

I remember in winter figuring out all the ways to get around by going through buildings to keep warm.
The MU isn't nearly as cool as it was back in the day but it is still better than most of the others I've been in around the midwest.

Living proof example right here.

My daughter did not want to go to ISU - convinced it was too big, and also she would have been bottom quartile academically (lots of problems growing up, not of her making). Despite it being my alma mater, her older brother just had graduated in EE, and she had been to tons of BB and FB games, seen the campus. But she did NOT want to follow along.

Convinced her to take the tour, just to humor me really. I had no expectations. Afterwards she said "I could see me going here." Once she saw - I will live here, have classes there, eat here, workout there, etc - it was much more discrete and felt manageable.

She graduated with her BS, now has masters and is doing great. ISU was a big part of that.

I could not be prouder of her, and I tell everyone with a junior/senior - take the tours, but especially take the ISU tour.

The old Alumni Hall basement had a student run vegan "restaurant." Called the Quarter Stove Cafe, it was appealing not because I was vegan but cheap and good. Anyone else recall that. I had a buddy and we'd eat there and have fond memories of the place spending less than a few bucks.

Ah yes, the Pride Lounge. It was kind of hidden away. Always liked that place. I'd just relax and watch all the students walk by through the large arched windows.

The library tiers were a favorite for the very stupid (but effective) pregaming activity "Beers in Tiers." Drink a beer on each tier, as fast as you can, without getting caught. Bonus points for leaving the empties in creative spots on the shelves.

1993, hot dogs and a can of Pepsi for a dollar.
I’m pretty sure they were serving beer on the MU terrace in the mid 1980’s. I could be wrong, but I know it was packed on a nice Friday afternoon. I don’t recall this being an every Friday thing, but I do recall at least once wondering through the crowd on the terrace with my backpack right after class.

Not my favorite place but the M shop was a lot of fun. Donate blood up in the great hall then go downstairs and split a pitcher with friends before your next class.

Another "gramps" story: My favorite part of campus was a room on 3rd floor Storms tower. Yes we were somewhat coed back then (early 70's), first three floors girls, balance of Storms guys. She had a room to herself, and I had a key to her room. I think I spent more nights in her room than mine on Sage. We eventually married and moved to Pammel for my final year. Moved back to the farm after graduating and it wasn't a great fit for that city gal. We ended up parting ways about a year later. I always remember it as the only course I flunked at ISU, but we sure did a lot of "studying" for it in the Towers--almost nightly. I still like to think that is why they tore down Storms.

The Christian Petersen sculpture of dairy cows drinking at Dairy Industry Building. In the 70’s you get access it by climbing over a wall in a delivery lot on the east side of the building. Now it’s in the center of the building
This! Best place to visit with a young lady at night back when you could access it from the dock! That whole court yard was essentially always empty.

Definitely central campus and the Campanile, just gorgeous. Particularly during summer school, back in the 80s there were so few people on campus then and in town both, I loved it. Tranquil.
Yes I stayed in town one summer and worked. Enjoyed all the resources without having to share. The only negative was you had to plan basketball time as there wasn’t a pick up game available at all times of the day like during the school year.
