Your Biggest "Coincidence"

In the winter we travel south, from Myrtle beach to Miami, along the Gulf, Caribbean, Key West, Mexico coast both sides etc. We always wait and anticipate seeing a Hawkeye fan wearing a shirt or cap with Hawkeye symbol blazingly displayed. Never disappoints whether it's Puerto Vallarta, West Palm Beach, etc. and of course they are always arrogant douche canoes. On the other hand, we were on top of the Twin Towers when a guy next to me had an ISU shirt on but he was tastefully mature.

I was in the hotel lobby at the 5 Seasons Center, when Ann and Nancy Wison walked in, along with the rest of the band. I was too nervous to say anything. I had a huge crush on Nancy at the time.

We went to Europe last summer as a bit if a send-off before my daughter went off to college. Near the end of our trip, we were walking in Lauterbrunnen and my daughter randomly got quiet and a bit sad.

I asked her what was wrong, thinking maybe she was a bit homesick after a few weeks. She simply said, "I wish my brother could have seen this. I bet he would have loved it."

We walked for a little bit more and stopped at a restaurant with an outdoor patio. About 5 minutes after sitting down, we glanced across the road and saw an amazing double rainbow.

I got a warm fuzzy reading that and have another coincidence to share with you. My family has strong connection to Switzerland. I am called an "Honorary Citizen" of the country and if ever anyone gets to Bremgarten my family name is very prominent in businesses and families there. Most of my family has been there as have many from there have come to the USA.

I went to Kenya on a month long mission trip in college. We had a day off and went to the zoo and of course come across a guy wearing an Iowa hat… in Nairobi, Kenya

Was on a work trip (didn't have that many). Was in SFO with coworkers waiting on a connection and a guy I knew pretty well from Florida comes strolling down the concourse. He was changing planes coming back from a vacation in Hawaii. So two people from different part of the US who happened to know each other randomly meet in another part of the US.

I worked at Muscatine Hy-Vee for 4 years before I decided to go to ISU.

One of the meat-cutters from there had transferred out before I left.

I was in my dorm in Knapp Hall (RIP) and the kid in the room next door had some visitors. I heard a familiar voice. Walked out to look and it was the meat-cutter from Muscatine. He had transferred to the one in my dorm neighbor's hometown. Possibly Perry (I don't remember for sure).

My wife and I worked for the same insurance company but she was in Omaha and I worked at the West Des Moines office. Then the company decided to close our office, so I was out of a job. But then they decided to ask if anyone wanted to move to Omaha, and I figured why not. You just never know when a decision changes your whole life.

We went to Disney world several years ago. My wife wanted a picture outside of the park by the sign. My wife turns and just stops asks random woman walking by her to take our photo. The woman stops and looks at us and then says hi I’m so and so. It was a woman from her hometown that she taught in elementary school that now lives in a different state.

Saw Dennis Rodman at the Million Dollar Saloon (titty bar in Dallas) back in the early 90's. Don't know if that qualifies as coincidence, but it was amusing at the time.

My wife and I were in Greece this past spring. We traveled to a small village in the middle of Greece (around 1500 people) called Kastriki which is located near the Meteora rock formation and monastaries. When walking through the village a car pulls over and a family from our local town hop out to let us know they are visiting the monastaries too. We hardly ever run into these people in our town but we ran into them in a small village in Greece.

When my grandma needed to go into a nursing home, my mom & aunt sold her house and the lot it was on, but kept the surrounding farmland. My mom & aunt hired a longtime neighbor to tend to the fields, and kept that arrangement after my grandma passed.

Fast forward a few years. My mom & dad are down in Florida visiting Disney. My mom happens to see an employee close to their age with his nametag listing his hometown as the tiny town right next door to my mom's hometown. Mom's never met a stranger, so she starts talking to him. Turns out, this gentleman is a snowbird, and the neighbor my mom & aunt hired sub-contracted some of the field work out to this Disney employee.

Many moons ago, when living in Nebraska, husband used to cover Nebraska sports. We'd go on roadtrips on our own dime. He'd get a press pass, I'd try to find a cheap ticket. Back when Nebraska was still in the B12, we went down to Stillwater. It's just now halftime, and I find myself standing on the balcony of the end zone building that's to the right if you're watching an OSU game on TV. I'm kinda staring off into space as I'm pressed up against the wall to let people pass. I do notice a diminutive man walk past, flanked by two, much larger men. About five seconds later, still staring at nothing, I realize "Huh. That was Barry Sanders." And that was that.

When I was working at Hy-Vee a big part of my job was to be there at 5 AM to receive and stock the milk and dairy case. The semi load came from Hometown Dairy in Iowa City. One morning there was a different driver who had taken over the route. Soon thereafter he and I were talking and becoming acquainted, mentioned his last name. I recognized it as one that my grandparents mentioned quite often.

What I didn't realize until he told me, was that my grandmother's sister, my great aunt, was married into that family and the driver was actually my great aunt's son, which is my first cousin, once removed.

I was working as a feed salesperson in the 1980s, I called on farmer one time. Two weeks later we were at Pikes Peak, Colorado. There was the farmer with a "good" hat on. It was a Garst Seed cap. Had a lot of orange in it, and very memorable. We talked, I never did get his business.

I saw a guy wearing an Iowa state shirt in Monaco. I went to ask him about it and he was from the Philippines, we could barely communicate due to a language barrier, and he had no idea where Iowa was.

In the early 2000s, I was waiting for a Southwest plane to Washington DC not long after my Mormon mission to Russia. I noticed an older lady who by manner of dress and demeanor was a stereotypical Russian babushka at the gate as well.

I boarded the plane and took a seat because Southwest had open seating. Not long after this lady boarded and sat next to me. Sure enough, she was who I thought she was and didn’t speak a word of English. She was surprised I could converse with her. She told me in Russian she was going to visit her son who had immigrated to Nashville.

That seemed odd that she was on a plane to DC. I pretty quickly figured out that she was on the wrong plane and had somehow slipped through the ticket verification when boarding. I was able to alert the flight attendants in time and they helped her get off. And hopefully on to the right plane.

Back in the day, when Bo Derek was at the height of her popularity, I spent a long day on the farm doing spring tillage--one of several days in a row as we farmed enough ground to push our machinery capabilities to their limits. At the end of the day, I showered, grabbed a quick bite for supper, and headed to bed. That night I had a pleasant dream in which Bo played an integral part.
Fast forward several years later, and it turned out the dream was meaningless. I know, I was hoping this story had more substance, just like those of you that have followed along so far--but it didn't. :) :):)

When I got married, my wife sold her townhome and moved into my house, and then we bought another house and put my old one on the market. Had it sold and then their loan fell through (for reasons that were present when I bought the house, grrr). Rented it for a couple years and then were just about to put it back on the market when my parents needed to find a place close to us. Mom passed in 2015 and Dad lived there until last Sunday when he passed away. It was like the house was meant to be available to them, and they got to spend the last years of their lives close to my sister and I and the grandkids.

I lost my father in March as well...not sure if this fits but the coincidence piece is that there was a lot of build up of health issues, and potential for some really rough waters coming down the pike.

The night before he died I was saying to someone how I'd take 'that call', even as sad and terrible as it is, vs. 6 months+ of moving to a center, more medical issues, losing his dignity, etc.

The next morning I woke up to 'that call' and it's been a whirlwind of all sorts of things, and while it's been hard, I would still sign up for that and the band aid ripped off while he still had his dignity vs. a dreadful final stanza.

My dad really did die during finals week, that son of a ***** couldn’t wait one more week lol (it’s been almost 15 years now, I can laugh about it)

Only one professor didn’t believe me (initially) but it also was one of the giant math classes. I had to remind them of the email/time we talked at the beginning of the semester about the situation. Had to take all the finals at the beginning of the next semester and pretty much failed them all and it killed my GPA but whatever.
