New Randy column is up.

He looks back at the Big 12 from 2016 to now and the amount of turnover is pretty wild. Not a single head coach from that group is still around. Good perspective piece with Media Days this week!

Most Big 12 football coaches over the past decade appeared fired, retired, or the few who aspired to bigger, better things. Is it a Rorschach test or a fill-in-the-blank? The decade's funky flavor of money, relentless demands for success, and the way fortune cookie crumbles unpredictably.

I get this is for Big 12 media days but wouldn't this largely be true for the big 10 and sec too? Not really a Big 12 specific thing
Obviously ferentz the outlier in the big 10
Only Kirby Smart at Georgia for the sec?

AI generated and I haven't verified, but here are the major conference coaches that have been at their schools for more than 10 years. Not really a problem specific to the Big XII.

Kirk Ferentz (1999) - Iowa, Big Ten
Dabo Swinney (2008) - Clemson, ACC
Dave Doeren (2013) - NC State, ACC
Pat Narduzzi (2015) - Pittsburgh, ACC
Kirby Smart (2016) - Georgia, SEC
Kalani Sitake (2016) - BYU, Big 12

That's pretty believable, and even of this list, Sitake was almost out the door from BYU before Campbell went.

Ten years is a long time in power coaching. It's an accomplishment these days to stay that long at this level.

Yep, its a high turnover, 'what have you done for me lately' industry. In terms of tenure:

In the big 10 i think you've got Kirk and then a large gap to Fleck in 2017, and then Locksley and Day in 2019, everyone else 2020 or after.
The ACC has Dabo since 08, Narduzzi since 2013, and Doeren since 2015 and everyone else 2020 or after
The SEC has Kirby and everyone else is 2020 or after. (8 teams have replaced coaches in the last 3 years)
The big 12 has Sitake since 2016 and then everyone is 2020 or after

A few years ago, as my nephew was playing his COVID year at Georgia Southern, I sat in Jack Trice Stadium and looked down on the field to see two coaches who had made offers to him at other schools:
  • Matt Campbell at Toledo right before coming to Iowa State.
  • Lance Leipold at Buffalo before coming to Kansas.
He went to Buffalo despite my best efforts to get him to follow Campbell to Iowa State.

It takes a lot of faith to believe that the coach who recruits you to a school will stay at that school long enough for you to graduate.
