There is no way in hell Dowling should be in a conference with the smaller schools.

It's not a football league, so I don't think they'd dominate sports as much as you think.

I'm out of the loop on a lot of the sports, but they have been really good in girls basketball, pretty good in boys basketball, and not very good in baseball. It looks like they have been toward the bottom in the CIML in soccer and softball.

But if they wanted to add B-F and a couple other schools to the small school division and move Dowling up to the large school division, that would be fine.

But Dowling isn't a juggernaut in sports outside of football and maybe girls basketball. I'm sure there are swimming or golf or whatever other sports they might be really good at, but I have no idea about those. The team sports where you are competing consistently with conference teams, they would not dominate across the board.

The biggest hangup with double elimination for baseball is the logistics of needing one field per class to get the thing done in 5 days (and hope for no delays).

Fort Dodge has 5 softball fields going full-tilt Mon-Wed, and can use Thursday morning as a make-up if necessary before having champ games Thursday night and Friday.

Baseball's options would be (a) 4 different cities or (b) pick the 2-4 best/biggest high school fields in a combo of metro areas.

I like the double elimination but don't like the idea that you can beat a team, then have to play them again if you lose your 2nd game. If you lose the first game, and are in the top half of the bracket, you should be playing teams in the bottom half, same for those in the bottom half, playing team in the top half. It's very possible for a team to win the first round, lose the 2nd round and then have to face the team they beat in the first round in their 3rd game. That should never happen where you are playing the same team 2 out of the 3 games.

Pella Christian would absolutely dominate the SCC. Boys basketball went to state four years in a row recently and won a state championship during that run. They won the state track meet in girls this spring, dominating the meet. The SCC would fight it if it came to the state deciding I would guess. Pella Christian in the SCC would destabilize that conference IMHO.

PC hasn't been to state since 2023. They went in 20, 22, and 23. Their last championship was in 1993.



Yes, their girls won state track by 10 points. I don't know if that would be considered dominating. Dominating would be the Waukee NW girls winning by 74 points in Class 4A, or the Pella boys winning by 41 points in Class 3A.

Looking at the girls tournament there has to be a better way to set up a double elimination tournament. In 2A, Cardinal was the 8th seed, played and beat the #1 seed Grand View. So Cardinal moves on to play #4 seed IC Regina, which they lose. Now they get to play Grand View again in the losers bracket and if they would beat them again, they are playing Regina again. For the life of me why is Grand View and Hinton the other loser in the top of the bracket not moved to the lower part of the bracket and those in the bottom moved up. Not really fair to play some teams twice, but play none of the lower bracket teams.

Stand corrected on the last state championship but I would call winning seven state titles and scoring 78 points dominating for their class, including back to back team wins.

Yeah, it's like they read the print-a-bracket wrong. They need to flip sides of the bracket for the 2nd round winner's bracket losers and that fixes the whole problem. All they need to do is exactly copy the Women's College World Series.

It's interesting because MCWS stays in brackets and WCWS crosses over. Of course, it's easy to do either way when they're only playing those two games on a particular day.

The Union would have to monkey with the overall tournament schedule (order and # of games per day) to get it to work "right."

This is the 1st yr, take the feedback get the kinks out and improve next yr. But your point is valid, all they had to do was copy college and they would have had it right. That was a stumble by the scheduling crew.

Ft. Dodge has spent a lot of money upgrading the facilities, I think there was rumors that the girls union was looking at a more centrally located setup in Ames or Des Moines and Ft. Dodge decided if they wanted to keep the tournament they were going to have to spend some money on the complex. Right now it's excellent for softball.
