I don't have an i4, but considered it last year when I replaced my old beater sedan. All the reviews LOVED it, just a really good car period. Fast, sporty, decent range, fun to drive. I was sorely tempted, and already interested in EVs.

I probably would have got it, except I mostly need something for winter (already have a motorcycle and a convertible) so it felt dumb to get a high performance sports car for mostly winter driving.

With the winter thing, I instead got a Corolla Cross hybrid SUV. The exact opposite of "fun to drive", but super practical. You are what you drive I suppose lol.

My question is how many consider first getting solar power in place, then acquire an e-vehicle.

Quick road trip through rural Iowa this weekend and had my 16 yr old drive a few hours.

She merged into the left lane and said "Oh no! Sorry! I think I just cut off that Tesla!"

I check my mirror and as expected, the dude was slouched and half asleep, staring at his phone.

"Don't worry, that guy had no idea you merged in a bit close - he's on his phone and has no idea what's going on lol"

IDK, but I do have solar. PTSD from the derecho, and we have a well so we gots to have water.

I'd have to add panels to support the EV, but fairly easy with the rest (including batteries) in place already.

I have a 2024 i4-m50. It's such a fun car to drive. Even the eco mode has some pep, but when you switch it to sport mode, it becomes an entirely different animal. It's not as quick as a model S, but it it can definitely move and throw you back into the seat.

I wish the battery life was better, but now that it supports the Tesla charging network, I don't really worry about range. And let's face it, I didn't get it for the range.

So, short answer, I love it.

Also, I’m not a fan of the ford bronco and the rivians look pretty much identical to them. The shape of them looks like they tried to take an old S10 blazer and make it more boxy.

That is a consideration, but my line of thought goes further.
There were credits for installing solar, then you juice your home, sell excess electric, have a backup power source in outages, as-well-as recharge your e-car for almost nothing.

The lights are polarizing for sure. I got past them though and recently bought a R1T. It’s both familiar as a vehicle and very different. Overall it’s been very positive. I’d been on the fence for a while and ultimately took the leap. I’m not an Elan fan and I think Rivian has really done a great job of making an intuitive vehicle that is a lot of fun to drive.

I’m not trying to save the planet, but I do think ICE powered vehicles have been artificially propped up for decades for numerous reasons and the current administration is decidedly anti-EV.

I think it’s very cool that I could charge it via solar panels that I install. I haven’t done that yet. I live in Austin, TX and Austin Energy isn’t exactly fair when it comes to compensating you for the energy you harness via the sun. So, I may put up solar panels, I don’t know yet, but EVs seem like a step forward and I like that and want to support that. I kinda sense the populace is turning more toward EV and solar lately.

Now for my rant, it’s really frustrating when your government isn’t focused on the future, but rather protecting the past and stifling innovation. A short-sighted society is not destined for long-term success and happiness.

Austin Energy about 5 cents per KW on the sell back?

The credits are gone now I think. I got the credit when I installed, and it is still 20-25 year payback. Solar is maybe like planting a tree in your yard - you don't plant it for you, you plant it for the next owner.

And Alliant got the buy-sell rules changed somehow and I am getting a little less for my excess than I was.

What is the compensation, and what do you consider fair? My agreement with the electric company for over production is what they buy electric for. To me that seems fair, why should the company pay me more than they can purchase it? If they do, that means solar is raising the rates for all the other customers. Then throw in that they own the infrastructure to move the electricity from my transformer to the other customers and I didn’t pay a cent for that.

They look nothing alike. You need to get your eyes checked.
