Trade bait. Best way to advertise your trade bait is to get them to the bigs, not many eyes on Iowa. Alcantara isn't looking good in limited opportunities, or maybe it's Dean heading down. I forgot he was even on the team until he pinch-hit for PCA the other night!

I actually don't mind Dean on the roster. He doesn't need ABs, he's a really good baserunner and can play all three outfield spots at a plus level. He's the perfect 26th guy and he'll definitely be on the postseason roster.

Definitely a logjam of versatile infielders for the Cubs with Ramirez, Shaw, and Triantos. I would guess that two of them are gone after August 3rd which makes the Bregman signing even more annoying.

Arraez probably wouldn't happen because he probably wants to play 2b vs mainly a DH/utility role with the Cubs.

But some of you folks are funny:
  • He doesn't walk enough. Dude also doesn't strike out!! He has 18 strike outs and 27 walks.
  • He's hitting .320 with a .359 OBP. That would be on par with Suzuki and behind only PCA & Busch.
  • We need a DH with slug. I could agree with that if the Cubs would add a 25HR guy at the deadline. But how likely is that? And it not like the Cubs lineup isn't already loaded with HR hitters. What the Cubs lack is someone who can consistently move PCA along.
  • Fielding wise he OAA this year is excellent. BUT not every player needs to be gold glove level. He's very solid with 5 errors this season. Plus, he played 1B almost entirely with the Padres in 2025. The Cubs don't really have a backup for Busch. Kelly has been thrust into it.
In the end, it comes down to whether Arraez can make the Cubs a better offensive team in the playoffs.

Alright where are we going to go in the next 10 days?

I'd love Detmers - gives you a clear top of the rotation arm for cheap for the next 3 years. I'd be comfortable starting him in a playoff game.

Holmes has the exact makeup that Zombro loves and is a rental so I doubt he'd break the bank. Wouldn't mind getting him in and then seeing if he's a guy we re-sign in FA.

Detmers is a top of the rotation guy? Maybe given our current rotation injuries he would be but he's probably more like a 3 at best. I do like the multiple years of control aspect though. I'd rather have Soriano to be honest as we already have 2 LHP in the rotation with Shota and Boyd and technically a 3rd in Peterson right now too plus I think Soriano has a bit more upside. Soriano also throws a harder fastball which is something we could use to offset our softer tossing guys. Both have multiple years of control left which makes me thinks the Angels asking price is going to be quite a bit. Either would be a nice addition that also fills a rotation need for next season too.

I saw an article yesterday saying we have exactly what the Angels are coveting for their starting pitching ( Ayers ). If we can land Deters or even Soriano for him and get two more years of control that’s a no brainer.

I agree, Ayers is rising through the minors quickly but it's still probably a stretch that he could be ready to contribute at some point in Chicago next year given how you still have to develop him behind the plate defensively too. He just got promoted to AAA recently but he started the year in A+ so he probably could use a full season in AAA. And as we have discussed here you can't just hold onto all your prospects with the worry that you may trade away a guy that turns into a stud as we have seen that play out many times the past 5-10 years and the guys we held onto haven't really panned out so we missed out on cashing in on some prospect capital for guys that might of helped us make a push in that moment.

I look at our prospects right now and Hartshorn, Conrad, and Wiggins are about the only guys on the list I would say are off limits unless you get a helluva a player with multiple years left in return. Rojas, Long, Triantos, and Ramirez are all blocked at their positions and while Ayers is not really blocked he may be necessary to make the kind of trade we need to. I'd be fine if Ballesteros is part of a deal too, not sure if he will be anything more than a DH and possibly part time catcher and I think you can replace him fairly easily if means improving our chances right now. Alcantara obviously is in play too but I'm not sure just how much value he has anymore as he's another example of a guy we probably should have traded 1-2 years ago.

Jed waiting too long on Caissie and repeated the mistake with Alcantara. Got way less than he could have before Caissie got to AAA and destroyed Alcantara's value.

I think you're at the same point with Wiggins. Trade him now before the elbow blows up again or people start to really look at that walk rate.

Canario was another one like Alcantara, was absolutely mashing AAA hitting at times then when we called him up much like Alcantara we barely played him and destroyed his trade value. Time will tell if Caissie pans out but probably traded him a year too late as well. If these guys don't have paths to get a shot at being a full-time player in Chicago in the near future, I don't know why Jed hesitates so much to move them in a trade that could help us in the present.

I would have been perfectly fine if Jed thought one of these guys were the future at a position, then cleared out the path for a prospect to start every day and then they flopped. At least then we made the commitment that we felt that guy was a prospect we could not afford to lose but wound up being wrong on it. I'd rather someone else be the one that was wrong but can't have this mentality that every prospect we may trade is going to blow up and be a star because there usually are more misses than hits when it comes to prospects - or at least with the Cubs it seems that way.

He's got all these infield prospects when the only path to playing time in the next 4 years is a corner outfield spot and none of them have the slug, except for possibly Shaw, to work there.

TRADE them for cost controlled proven players.

This is why I was pissed with what they did last year at the deadline? They hoard their prospects that are in AAA. They know you can’t play everyone and most will flop so why hold. There was no reason for the Jonathon Long Triantos types to still be in the org last year. Flip them for a reliever

I would do th Cassie for Cabrera type deals every day of the week
