toyin with the idea of getting a hot tub. already have pad for it. any opinions on brands you like or that I should avoid? is saltwater the way to go these days? is used worth the risk? I'm not bad with plumbing, but I hear they're kind of a pain to fix.
probably looking for something in the 7x7 or 8x8 size range.

I would have never thought to get one. Never wanted one. Bought a house with an old Sundance. Used it all the time until it basically rotted away (it was over twenty years old) replaced it with basically the same model by jacuzzi (they bought out Sundance years ago). We use it almost every day.
As far as prices go, decide if you want to pay up front for one that will last fifteen-twenty years or go cheaper for one that is good for five-ten years. The newer ones with ultraviolet light and dual filters are so dummy proof it’s pretty easy to maintain clean, clear water
