After the game last year in Ames, you might think I'd have zero hope for your visit to Jonesboro this year.

You'd be right! But even so, I enjoyed getting to know you guys last year, and actively watched Iowa State any time I had the chance. The comeback and last minute defeat of Miami to finish the season was one of the best bowl games I watched.

For those of you making the trip, I will be happy to make recommendations for food, drink and debauchery. You will find that Craighead County is the wettest dry county in America. I think you will also find the tailgating and stadium to be better than expected.

As for the game, I really wish it wasn't at 3PM! Woof. I fully expect you guys will be in the Top 15, and I would think the atmosphere should be pretty fun but it's gonna be hot.

You might have seen that we limped our way to 8 wins last year, but we've had such a major roster turnover, most of us don't really know what to expect. The key skill players are still in place, but almost everything else has seen a shake up. Even though I don't think you saw a great showing from us last year, we are cautiously optimistic to be able to keep it a bit closer this year, which probably means Iowa State by 60.

The week prior, we will be facing the Arkansas Razorbacks for the first time in history. There was a previous longstanding policy of the UofA not to play in-state schools. The game will be in Little Rock, and emotions will be elevated. I have no idea what to expect, but some of it will surely carry over to the Iowa State game either way.

Let me know what questions you guys have about visiting J-town, and I'll see you around!

Welcome back. That is kind of an insane policy of Arkansas not playing in-state schools. What was the reason for that?

Curious, do you recommend staying in Jonesboro or staying in Memphis?
Memphis' reputation as being a sketchy place is pretty well earned. I've both lived and worked in Memphis, and it's hard for me to recommend anyone stay there unless that is their destination or you have other things you want to do in Memphis. The drive itself from Memphis to Jonesboro is less than an hour, but gameday traffic coming from the South on Red Wolf BLVD will add 30 minutes to that.

If you don't mind spending a little extra, the Embassy Suites is where the Teams stay and its next door to the football stadium. Would only be about a 3 minute walk to the gates. Otherwise, the other hotels are standard. Jonesboro has some excellent restaurants, and some other day activities if you are looking for stuff to do Sunday.

It was a UofA policy. They have a long-standing history of wanting to be the only D1 program in the state, and did a lot of underhanded things over the years to hurt Arkansas State, as well as the other in-state programs. Most Arkansans wanted the game, but it took some legislative encouragement to make it happen.

This article is a pretty neat read on the situation actually. Little Rock is trying to salvage UofA playing a game there a year.

I made a few small edits.

Sounds familiar folks, doesn't it?

I need to add one caveat to this. If you want to stay in Memphis area, there is a really nice and fairly new Casino in West Memphis. It's on the Arkansas side of the I55 Bridge. Very nice and lots of good food, pluse puts you about 45 minutes from Jonesboro since you are already on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi.

For the same reason some Iowa fans don't want to play us. They feel it gives us too much publicity and too many chances to create more fans by playing them every year.
