When will the IRS focus on NIL payments?

Would be funny if this happened and then the We Will "employees" (football/basketball players) unionized and threatened to stop playing games without getting paid more.

Flex Protect Plus scheduling and if the Big 12 would adopt a similar model

It's simple math. 3 of Iowa's games are locked in as Neb, Minn, and Wisc. So they have 6 slots left for everybody else. The rest of the league has fewer games locked in; some have 2, some have 1, and Penn State has 0. So they have 7, 8, or 9 rotation slots to fill. More slots = more chances to...

Flex Protect Plus scheduling and if the Big 12 would adopt a similar model

However, because Iowa is the only B1G team with 3 protected rivals, they are going to play Ohio State, Michigan, USC (and all teams not named Neb/Minn/Wisc) less frequently than every other B1G team will face them.

When will the IRS focus on NIL payments?

The IRS is taking the position that donations to NIL collectives are not tax deductible. https://kpmg.com/us/en/home/insights/2023/06/tnf-glam-organizations-developing-nil-opportunities-for-student-athletes-generally-will-not-qualify-as-tax-exempt.html

Flex Protect Plus scheduling and if the Big 12 would adopt a similar model

Personally I think only K-State needs to be protected. It's somewhere in the Top 10 for longest continually-played series in all of college football. Every season since 1917. KU would be nice but I don't view it as a rivalry so much as a school we have history with that we can easily drive to...

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

True for the SEC and much less so for the B1G. They have the most money, most fans but they lack the same quality of football perception. The B1G has the most to gain from manipulating the process at this point.

The AAU is over 70 now with the newest wave. It also added Notre Dame, Miami, USF, GW.

    Saia leaves ISU women’s tennis

Don’t we play matches at Ames High? Our resources are totally uncompetitive. It’s amazing what he did here but ISU has invested nothing into tennis and it shows. That’s not a bad thing but it’s also an obvious reason for him to leave.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Aren’t those two different numbers? The $50MM is all in with television, bowl games, March Madness, etc. The Big 12’s new TV deal is worth 31MM. More than 25, but not double. Academic snobs could decide $6MM is not enough to leave Stanford and pretend their school is as good.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

We don’t know the dollar amount yet, so part of this ASU theory is a hope that the gap will be much smaller than that.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Agreed but I guess the theory is that even if Colorado and Arizona bail, they can add San Diego State and SMU and still have the Oregon/Washington upside and the Cal/Stanford academic connection. The issue of course is that league makes a lot less money than the B12 (or at least something...

    BEDS Rankings for 23-24

Probably going to have a little boom here, of private schools of all kinds, within the next 5 years.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I’m very curious what the plan is here if the next news is “Colorado and UConn are accepting Big 12 invites.” That puts us at 14 schools and puts the Pac down to 9. It also puts the BEast at 10, none with footbal. The Pac would be shaky for sure, but not really that much shakier than it...

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I am far from thrilled about UConn football in the Big 12 but I’ll trust Yormark. If we add UConn you can bet everything you own that he’ll immediately schedule Kansas to play them in hoops in NYC.

    BEDS Rankings for 23-24

As far as I know, Xavier (and Dowling, Assumption etc. though I’m less familiar with them) doesn’t turn down a prospective student because they are not Catholic, or are not Christian, or are openly atheist or whatever. They charge them higher tuition, make them agree to take a theology class and...

    BEDS Rankings for 23-24

Will be interesting to see if the vouchers change this. Xavier is not known for recruiting in the way that Dowling has been said to do the same in the DSM metro. But the allure of vouchers, plus perhaps a very small scholarship, could make attending Xavier free for top CR-area athletes if the...

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

They are very different; Bowlsby was an overseer/manager and Yormark is much more innovative. That's not 100% bad vs good - Yormark is going to take more risks than Bowlsby. But so far they have worked out. Yormark getting the TV deal extended early with ESPN and FOX has been a complete master...

Williams & Blum Pod: Where does Iowa State land in the new Big 12 hierarchy?

I think CW and Blum were saying slightly different things. I took it as CW is saying the Big 12 in hoops is gonna be like the SEC in football. And with heavy hitters all around, it’s impossible for an upper middle class type program (think Arkansas or even Texas A&M) to have consistent success...

Williams & Blum: UConn and the Big 12? ISU adds at DT via the portal

I am hopeful that once the dust settles with the B1G and SEC gobbling up whoever might make them one more dollar, the others actually organize by tradition and geography. That would mean ISU would be with KSU, KU, Oklahoma State, and Colorado, likely along with TCU/Baylor/Texas Tech/maybe the...
