Streets were crappy in Des Moines on my drive in at 8, but not much accumulation. Saw vehicles slipping and sliding around some.

Obligatory old guy rant....not quite sure why so many metro schools went with "Closed" over just a delay today.

Probably the timing. It likely won’t be s lot better in 2 hours. I’m surprised Des Moines is closed but sometimes I think they jump the the gun if they haven’t had any snow days.

I think the schools were closed rather than delayed because of timing. The snow will probably stick around until 3 when schools would get out.

I'd rather see a school close than a dead kid due to an accident.

No one wants a dead kid due to an accident. I just don't see that much increased risk today vs any other normal Iowa winter day. Sure, maybe if you're in that narrow band that got 5+ inches and visibilities are down and roads not staying clear you cancel school, but here in the metro??

After spending 30 minutes on the roads around the metro I totally understand why they didn't want a busload of kids on the roads this morning. There isn't a lot of snow, but the wintry mix made for some fairly bad driving conditions. I saw several close calls on my drive in.

And full disclosure, I have no issue against a 2 or even 3 hr delay. Get past the initial road condition changes, allow the city plows to do their work.

I think the fact that it started with a thick layer of ice is a pretty big deal.

But, again, the snow isn’t really supposed to stop until after noon. It was bad timing. Had this happened from 2:00 am-6 am, delay would have worked.

It’s not like Des Moines public has many snow days.

The worst driving conditions I’ve driven in were a lot like this. Cars on 50th street in west Des Moines were literally sliding down the hill by 235.

Because of the fact that the real stuff was originally supposed to come in earlier, and now that it is moving around the time that the busses would be on the roads/the fact that there was a flash freeze. This isn't 1970 anymore. The liability factor for schools is much higher than was 30, 20, or even 10 years ago. Student safety is the number 1 priority. If there is a high chance of detrimental road conditions, you don't want a bus on the roads. Just my 2 cents.

Just drove around in Ankeny. Nothing too bad, just typical winter in Iowa. Take your time, stay off your phone and you'll be fine.

Snow starting to fall thick in Floyd Co. Was able to get a great round of frisbee in with the dog on the icy lawn though, so that was fun.

I'm in the minority it seems but at least I'm not alone.

I do think we lose all rights to make fun on Atlanta and Charlotte when their city shuts down over 1" of snow after this.
Yeah, no.
For comparison, many Virginia schools are closed today because they're still recovering from the Bomb Cyclone. It's 60 degrees there today. The snow is either gone or in a state of rapid melting. I think we've got a while to go before we're on their level.
