I guess the stupid side of my brain is blocking the not so stupid side. How would conference scheduling work with 14 teams? I assume two 7 team divisions. Obviously, you'd play the other six in your division every year, but what about the cross-divisional play? It looks to me like you'd have uneven numbers of conference games in different years.
The 12 team layout makes perfect sense: play the other five in your division, and half the teams in the other. 8 conference games, allowing for 4 non-cons. Seems like some years you'd have one more home or one more away game, but at least it made sense, and was repeatable.
