The Omaha World-Herald has a big article on Perrion Winfrey of Iowa Western by Mike Sauter, “a prep recruiting specialist for the World-Herald”:
Suddenly, Iowa Western's Perrion Winfrey has offers from near, far — including Nebraska (2 hours ago, May 8) [gated]

Things have happened fast for Perrion Winfrey.
Just last season he was a backup defensive lineman at Iowa Western Community College. Now, less than five months later, Winfrey holds scholarship offers from 17 Division I football programs. ...
"I'm definitely going to take an official visit to Nebraska we just haven't set it up yet," Winfrey said. "I'm cool with all the coaches at Nebraska but coach (Scott) Frost and (defensive line coach Tony) Tuioti are really doing a good job of talking to me every day.”
So how did this happen? How did Winfrey's stock rise so quickly from backup to unblockable?
Such are the cycles of junior college recruiting.
"There were a few schools that were on him before he got here," IWCC coach Scott Strohmeier said. "But when they saw him live and in practice (this spring) they saw just how unblockable he was for us."
Winfrey wasn't an academic qualifier out of Chicago's Lake Park High School, so Iowa State pointed him toward Iowa Western.
"When he was going through the recruiting process and he knew he wasn't going to qualify they told him this was the place to go," Strohmeier said. "He is a likable guy. His personality is big and he's really done a good job with his academics and his maturity. That is why he is here."
As a freshman, Winfrey appeared in all eleven games for the Reivers, recording 27 tackles and four sacks.
Programs such as Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, LSU and Penn State have made trips to Council Bluffs this spring. Those schools along with Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Miami, Iowa State and Kentucky have offered scholarships.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Winfrey said of all the attention. ... ...
"He obviously has all the athleticism they are looking for," Strohmeier said. "He has got to narrow some of this down earlier than most people because he needs to focus on his academics. All of the attention and responding to the calls and messages can be overwhelming for a kid that is trying to focus on his season and take care of his academics."
Winfrey echoes Strohmeier's plan to get his recruitment over quickly. He also plans to be an early enrollee at whichever school he chooses.
“I want to get my decision over before the season so I can focus on my grades throughout the season,” Winfrey said. “I’m staying here all summer so I can make sure my grades are right.”
I’m not sure, since I just recently signed up for a digital subscription, but I’m not sure The World-Herald covered IWCC this much in the past. Almost always, the articles covering Iowa high school sports and IWCC in the both World-Herald and Council Bluffs Nonpareil are identical, with possible slight editing differences, as the newspapers are part of the same company.
If it wasn’t already doing this, it appears the World-Herald might start running gated articles concerning IWCC football recruiting, at least, separate from what they publish in the Nonpareil. I am on a 60 days for 99 cents deal (they offered 30 days more when I called to cancel). I am not sure I will continue to subscribe, which is a bit pricy, but I might. The two gated articles I’ve linked here also included nice videos on IWCC football.
In the first one, Coach Strohmeier says the defense is the team’s strength, with maybe 7 or 8 guys with offers now.
Anyway, others here, including the coaches, might want to be aware of such articles. If I don’t subscribe I won’t be linking them (and quoting parts).
I will add that my parents have always subscribed to the World-Herald. With all the Hoiberg coverage, it was interesting to see quotes from someone who, if I recall correctly, was their paperboy after they moved to town. His father was my 8th grade history teacher many years before that, when his parents moved in, and first started teaching and coaching in our school district.
Perrion Winfrey sounds like a great get, and I hope he becomes a Cyclone!
