Imagine that. The DSM suburb teams have such an advantage with enrollment numbers and funding. The new 5A was supposed to some what fix this but towns like Marshalltown, Ottumwa or even DSM metro will never compete.

When I played HS football in the 1970s, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson were routinely at or near the very bottom of the Omaha Metro league IIRC. Probably there were other high schools about the same size in the conference, but I imagine it had to do somewhat the same kind of issue -- faster-growing Omaha schools.
I don't think Iowa did districts like they do now -- even after they started the Iowa state championships in the 1970s -- but the issue resolved itself once they started playing Sioux City and other Iowa schools instead.
The issue then being that they might possibly be permanently consigned to the bottom of the Omaha Metro league (and never an Iowa playoff team).
There was an obvious out once they started play in Iowa districts (whenever that was).
