Seems like we have played really bad in the 2nd half offensively during conference games so I went back and looked. Here are some stats

@Kansas
46% FG and 7-13 3pt FG in the 1st half
27% FG and 2-15 3 PT FG in the 2nd half

Missouri
48% FG and 8-12 3pt FG in the 1st half
40% FG and 4-11 3 PT FG in the 2nd half

@A&M
51% FG and 6-15 3pt FG in the 1st half
41% FG and 2-8 3 PT FG in the 2nd half

Texas
59% FG and 9-12 3pt FG in the 1st half
43% FG and 1-9 3 PT FG in the 2nd half

So on average our FG % has decreased by 13.25% in the 2nd half

Also we are 30-52 (58%) from 3pt range in the 1st half versus 9-43 (21%) in the 2nd half

I think we come into games with a good gameplan and move the ball really well but for whatever reason we get out of that in the second half and you see a lot more iso's and lack of ball movement. For us to be successful in Big 12 play we can't keep this trend up. It's not only on the offensive end either as Kansas and Missouri shot 15.5% better in the 2nd half

I've observed the same tendency and have wondered if it is a strength and conditioning issue. It seems to me that fatigue may be a factor in the drop off.

Regardless of the reason, I would like to see us take fewer jump shots in the 2nd half and work harder at attacking the rim. That approach may improve our %s.

It all comes down to what ISU has always done for whatever reason in all sports and it is taking our foot off the gas. We are up so we try to change our game plan and hold on to the lead rather than continuing to play the style that got us there in the first place. It's been an epidemic at ISU for the past 20 years.

I think it has more to do with the opposition. From what I've noticed it's that the opposition plays much more in our face defensively in the second half which limits our open looks. This is why we seem to go Isolation with Royce so much in the second half and it's because we don't have the guards to beat the suffocating defense on the perimeter.

I've noticed it's more the last 5 minutes of each half. Can't explain it, but effort and results go way down. It's like they can't sustain a high level of operation for more than 15 consecutive minutes.

Going all the way back to the Michigan game......the only game we have shot the ball better in the 2nd half was against Lipscomb

I personally think the opposition so far this year has adjusted very well for in the second half to the hot shooter and we have not adjusted at all.

I thought we had a lot of great looks in the 2nd half against KU that simply weren't executed. We were running well designed plays that put our players into scoring position.

It was a straight up lack of execution out of our players.

Coaching.

We either a.) go into a conservative lead-preservation mode or b.) the opposition takes away something that was working in the 1st half and we don't adjust properly.

Hoiberg is still learning. I think he's getting better, but something like problem "a" above has been plaguing ISU sports for a long time, as mentioned above.

It most certainly isn't a). It's more b) and lack of offensive execution in the 2nd half.

We definitely haven't been going that conservative in Big 12 play. We did it a lot last year, but haven't seen much of it this year.

It definitely seems like lack of execution to me.

I haven't watch every game, but this has stuck out on several occasions :sad:

^This, good teams like KU and MIZZ aren't going to let us continue to pound them on offense, in both games they really got after us defensively in the second half and we didn't really have an answer. Like was said in the press conference Monday we need to find a way to stay patient when this happens and really work for a good shot on our possessions.

It's not just good teams though that we are struggling in the 2nd half against. It's happened in 9 out of the last 10 games where our offense has shot the ball worse in the 2nd half.

That is why I speculate it is a fatigue factor. When the legs go you need to get to the rim.

True, some of the issue in the second half prior to conference play I think may have been that we were often up by a fairly large margin at the half and just were not as sharp in the second half due to feeling like we had a comfortable lead. But I suppose it also had something to do with our opponents tightening up their defense toward the end of the game as well.
