That would be a weak move and not something I see JP doing. We have facilities and fan support that alot of coaches would crave.

I want best person we can get not settling.
Thanks, Rulzzz. That provides some insight.

I was thinking if JP still is aboard for transition (which seems likely) he’d find a way to maximize within realistic budget.

I think the best person we can get is going to look a lot like settling to a lot of fans.

Hmmm... what started as a post in celebration and remembrance of a huge moment in time for the Iowa State women's basketball program deteriorates into a debate of who replaces Coach when he retires.

Sad that we can't celebrate something good without it being derailed. But I guess that's to be expected on message boards.

It's a debate? Looks like it's a conversation about scenarios in the modern world and 30 years is 30 years. It will end some time.

This has easily been one of the most civil discussions of Bill's tenure and possible retirement from ISU that I can remember.

I don't think some people here appreciate how much of an issue it is. Brenda makes 1.9 mil. JB's new contract averages 1.6 mil. Bill makes a little under 900k.

I don't think it's a huge problem. We won't be hiring a Brenda or Jenny level coach, regardless of what peeps here think, so there maybe is a fan perception problem. We aren't throwing $1.5M+ at some top level coach in an attempt to lure them to Ames, we simply do not have the money. What we will be hiring (someday) is someone more the level of Dawn Plitzuweit who earns Fennelly level money at Minnesota. Going the top assistant level or young minor league coach (and taking a chance they can HC P5) would be cheaper but not sure we want to go that route. Billy is the wildcard and I am not totally convinced our AD won't just roll that way to save money if he thinks ISU can partially sustain a level of past success by doing that.

Yeah, the window to hire Jennie B is closed and there is no way she would come to ISU. Brenda F might come back but she would have to take a sizeable pay cut to do so.

Agree with others that Bill likely coaches two more years given the top 6 players on the roster are juniors. Hopefully, they can get Bill the first elusive outright conference title at ISU, at a minimum.

Also hope that Bill doesn’t attempt to time his departure in the late spring or summer to facilitate Billy replacing him. Bill has earned the right to retire on his terms but not force JP’s hand to hire Billy if the goal is to elevate the program within any salary budget constraints.

Regarding potential replacements, if a hire had to be made at this point, I think that Allison Pohlman and Kayla Karius would be real good candidates and if JP wanted someone from Bill’s tree, Heather Ezell would be much more viable IMO than Billy.

Didn't think about Ezell, maybe that's the way to go if ISU stays in the tree, and $ might not be as much hindrance.

HC results so far, not earth-shattering, but solid MWC performance & postseason appearances. Worth a look, I'd think.

Just saying that Allison would be an intriguing hire!!!

JP ALWAYS has a set of candidate names in his office. I don’t worry a bit about who the next coach will be.
I am sure he does, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has hired good replacements. No better examples than Chizik and CPR who were both DCs with no prior HC experience and they followed a fired HC who was also a DC with no HC experience. Thank goodness, the CMC hire successfully ended that trend.

Since those two hires, JP has put ore of a premium on HC experience (Fred being an exception a year or two after CPR was hired) and one would think that would preclude Billy being hired to replace Bill.

Fortunately he has had successful hires more often than bad ones. Chizek is an outlier in that he was truly building something as the CPR early success was due to his recruiting. He just had no commitment to being here…so I guess that is a fail in and of itself

Chizek was hot at the time and he just used us as a stepping stone.

Not to be harsh, but before Bill there was basically no women's program at ISU.
We had players and coaches and 0 following.
Careful, you are talking about my time! I reffed a women's team scrimmage in Hilton while in grad school at ISU and that was before Bill was there!
