I absolutely adore the original; own it on DVD and even saw The Christmas Story house in Cleveland. So, I'm tempted to check it out, but likely with tempered expectations.
They market what makes money. What do you think motivates the industry? You think they are forcing reboots and sequals on us through marketing because they like being jerks? Of course not. They push reboots and sequals because their market research shows it's easiest to sell what people are familiar with. It's not rocket science.
I think a lot of the best content is now TV shows or mini series. When I'm scrolling through Hulu, HBO or Netflix I'm almost always clicking on a series. That's what's usually new too. Doesn't seem like the streaming companies do as many movies anymore. And a lot of the Netflix original movies suckDamon has a clip where he talks about why there are no good new movies. The dissolution of the DVD market plays a part.
So this is good news to you. If the first movie is the worst movie ever made, then this one can only be better than that!Oh for all that is holy, please kill me now. The first movie was the worst movie ever made, period. It should have been burned and thrown away. It makes me like viscerally mad when it’s on.
This is possibly worse than a meteor hitting on Christmas Day, being forced to watch Groundhog Day, learning that Putrid Petra’s was transferring to ISU, or having to sit in Kinnick Stadium and watch the Iowa Offense.

This may be the third attempt that bounced off the original. If set today Ralphie would be ~82...more fitting for a grumpier old men sequel. So I saw this trailer earlier today as well which prompted me to look it up and there was a sequel made in 2012, which I had never heard of.
Watched it last night with my kids. No one should expect it to match the original as nothing could. It was a fun watch, not great by any means but enjoyed it.We watched it a couple weeks ago. Wasn't horrible but not near as good as the original.
