Is Dante injured? If not, I would prefer that we place our chips there. For whatever reasons, Meeks has not risen to the next level. Moreover, he has not really shown any promise that he could. Dante offers more at this point.

I hope so, but he's seemed on the cusp ever since his first match freshman year.

Maybe its time to let Boston go to 133 and prepare for next year. 125 for him feels like a losing battle. I think Larson can be a qualifier, and maybe win 1 or 2.

Partially, but mostly because Boston can't seem to ever make weight and Quean has to cut to make 285.

Arizona State won it 23-18

125: Kyle Larson (ISU) dec. Mikel Perales (ASU), 6-2.
133: Earl Hall (ISU) tech. fall over Tyree Owens (ASU), 20-4.
141: Robbie Mathers (ASU) dec. John Meeks (ISU), 8-3.
149: Matt Kraus (ASU) dec Gabe Moreno (ISU), 5-4.
157: Oliver Pierce (ASU) mdec. Logan Breitenbach (ISU), 12-3165: Tanner Weatherman (ISU) WBF over Jacen Petersen (ASU), (4:27).
174: Lelund Weatherspoon (ISU)mdec. Preston McCalmon, 11-3.
184: Blake Stauffer (ASU) dec. Dane Pestano (ISU), 8-2.
197: Josh DaSilveira (ASU) WBF over Marcus Harrington (ISU), 2:35.
285: Tanner Hall (ASU) mdec. Joe Scanlan (ISU), 10-0.

Seven of the guys did their jobs. Hall, Weatherman, and Weatherspoon all scored bonus, Pestano and Scanlon stayed off their backs, and Larson got the win he was supposed to. Pierce had already beaten Breitenbach this season so I wasn't expecting a win there. Harrington's pin didn't even end up being a dealbreaker because of the bonus points we got elsewhere. 141 and 149 were the last two matches and all we had to do was win one of them but neither Meeks or Moreno were able to get it done.

Overall for NCAAs I'd say the meet was a net neutral. Hall and Weatherman showed they can open up and score bonus (something they haven't always done this season) but Moreno is almost surely going to be unseeded and is going to need some luck in the draw.

Really glad to see Hall and Weatherman win. At this point those are the 2 I expect big things from. Moreno and Weatherspoon hopefully will do well at nationals, but I don't have as many expectations. Anyone else is gravy at this point.

Still would like to know what is going on at 141. We burned Dante's redshirt, but he isn't wrestling, and Meeks can't seem to get over the hump. Seems like 2 talented guys that won't give us much partly because of the split time.

I won't go on another rant about KJ's handling of 41 but to put it short, it failed epically again. We will have the exact same situation next year. Why he didn't hold Dante's shirt until Midlands is absolutely beyond my comprehension.

Anyway, Weatherman is wrestling much better lately. And seeing Hall put up points, regardless of quality of opponent, is a good thing. Right now I would bet we have 0 AA's with Hall right on the bubble. If he wrestles as we all know he can, he should fit in somewhere in the 5-8 range. But his performances this year do not support that. Hope he turns it on from here on out. And stops cutting people with less than 10 seconds left in a period.

And as a team this is a disappointing performance. Arizona State is unranked as a dual team in both Flo and Intermat. We were ranked 16 in Flo and 11 in Intermat. One step forward, two steps back.

I'm guessing Boston will have to go 133 next year, which is unfortunate because that means either him or Simmons will be on the bench. Was really wishing Boston would have been able to maintain 125 for at least this year and next. But if he can't make it, he can't make it.

I'm sorry, did someone say Arizona State?
I'll just leave this here.

I agree with you about being a disappointing performance but I wouldn't dwell too much on ASU's ranking. The matchups favored them in 5 matches and us in 5. But we dropped 141 and Moreno proved his ranking to be accurate at 149. Those two weights plus 197 are what cost us the dual. For Friday, Oklahoma is ranked 11th and we match up with them almost identically, with each team being favored in 5 matches.

Speaking of Oklahoma. Brewer didn't wrestle last night against Bucknell. And they forfeited so it must have been unexpected. Nashson Garrett of Cornell also forfeited last night and again today. You hate to see guys not healthy and able to wrestle their best but if those guys and Clark are all dealing with injuries that is a boost for Hall's AA chances.

Does anybody get the Pac-12 network and see how Harrington got pinned? Neither team has put up highlights.

No matter how you slice it, this is another bad loss for this historic program. ASU is OK, but should never beat us. I'm fearful we will make history and have zero AA's. When we are looking for injuries to boost our wrestler's AA chances, we have reached rock bottom. Peak in March or puke in March?

Team wins and losses mean literally nothing in NCAA Wrestling. A win over Virginia Tech or a loss to Arizona State has absolutely no bearing on the championship aspect of the season.

The team results may not have far reaching meaning but they are a measure.

Not really. And especially not around here, where it's a race to undermine results by listing all of the backups that wrestled for either team.

Until there's a legitimate dual-based championship, all we're doing is watching glorified exhibitions until March.
