As others said, as long as you’re not instigating, most likely you’ll just get a few “**** state” comments. The parking and tailgating scene is so unorganized and a nightmare, but I’d suggest walking around a bit on melrose and checking out that scene. I usually park by the old capitol and walk over that way.

Not sure how old you are but the bar scene is mainly for college kids, like Ames. Dublin Underground is a great spot tho regardless of age. Pagliais is one of the best pizza places in the country IMO so try that out if you’ve got time!

It's not acceptable to be cursed at, and receive insults based on wearing the colors of ISU. Fans like that are disgusting and should not be allowed to attend the game or be anywhere close to the stadium. Most of all, they ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Cmon, you don’t think hawk fans get ANY crap when they come through Ames for these games?? It’s a rivalry and that’s the great part about it! As long as things don’t get out of hand, I’ve got no issues with most of it. It’s what makes college football great

Been there once for a CyHok game.
Was the Seneca game. Great game!
However….
Will not go back again. The Hok fans were horrible. Even the old bastards sitting behind us.
1st half they were obnoxious, 2nd Half ISU comeback win….
oooh boy!!!
This was really the only game I have attended in IC where there were more than a handful of fans that were a little ugly. Perfect storm I think. Lots of all day drinking because of the unusual late start (530 I think) plus from their perspective they choked away a big halftime lead. Honestly have gone to 4 and never had any trouble whatsoever at the other three attended.

The only time I went was 2002. Spent most of the first quarter in the er getting stitched up from the keystone can I took to the back of the head. Then when we got in about a dozen 40 something drunk ***** went after my son in a wheelchair.
Don’t ever let those mother ******* tell you they give two ***** about disabled kids. Left at halftime (probably saw 8 minutes of the game) and the only way I’m going back is the day they implode that **** hole.

I haven’t read the entire thread but went straight to the comment to say what I’m sure many others have already said.

I’ve attended 2 Cy Hawk games in Iowa City. Each time, the majority of people were insufferable. The first game I went to there, I was taking a piss at halftime and some guy (frat bro) in the urinal next to me turned to me and said to me “Iowa State F’ing sucks and you guys are going to F’ing lose”. I just said back to him that I am just trying to pee and I told him that it was very weird that he was literally in my face while my **** is out.

The second time, we got our asses kicked. We were walking back to the car and a really drunk Iowa fan started berating our group. He followed us down the street for a while yelling at us. I finally turned around and extended my hand and said good game, congratulations. He turned around and walked away after that. Without shaking my hand. There were a couple Iowa fans sitting in their front yard that witnessed it. They invited us over for beers and apologized for the other fan. They were cool.

It's fine. I'd highly recommend staying in or around Iowa City and not actually driving yourself/parking at the stadium. If you have family or friends you can stay with and walk/Uber/etc just do that. Even if you're not drinking, getting around is a complete clusterf*ck and total headache.

A lot of the stories of hostility are overrated. You'll hear a lot of "F*ck State" and stuff like that. I had a drink thrown at me once, and saw another thrown at my friend on a separate occasion.

I was in Iowa City for every CyHawk game from 2002-2012 and never felt like I was actually in any kind of jeopardy.

It's far more fun if you have some kind of in with people who regularly tailgate in Iowa City, and have already down the legwork of setting a spot up.

Just try not to get peed on (probably intentional) or vomited on (probably accidental).

After two straight games in Iowa City of seeing someone trying to pee on someone else I decided to never go back.

Let me be the first to underrate the hostility. Getting a keg tapper handle thrown through the back glass of my college car was a hoot. Good times for a broke student.

Meh I would go if the tickets were free. We always park over by the Johnson County jail on the other side of the river. Still a bit of a walk and not easy to get out driving wise up highway 1 but we think it is better than fighting the cluster of traffic on the west side.

I watched ISU fans chuck a cinder block through the windshield of an Iowa fan's car in Ames my freshman year (2003) and my thought was "they had it coming" for even being here.

For sure, why waste a good cinder block?

I will say, every time the game has been in Ames, my wife has always been treated respectfully. Never been yelled at by drunk ******** while wearing her Iowa garb. She will get some friendly ribbing, but has never been talked down to or had things thrown at her. Cant say the same for me when Ive been in Iowa City. Not ONE experience where I havent had this kind of behavior. I am not a person who likes to stand out in public, I dont talk ****, or draw attention to myself. The last time I was there for the Cy-Hawk game in the last few years, was the worst. She will even admit that its bizarre. I know there are good folks over there, but I just have zero desire anymore to make that trek and deal with that nonsense anymore.

I have been to about a dozen games in Iowa City. I usually walk around the stadium and tailgating areas to check out the atmosphere. I can't help but think the hox wish they had our atmosphere for tailgating. Except for comments from students we have been treated fine. The traffic is terrible after the game.

If you are able to walk definitely try and park south of the stadium near the Benton Street area (watch out for no parking areas). There used to be an old open lot at either a school or a church that you could pay to park in. Leave via Highway 1. It won't be quick but it'll definitely be quicker.

I grew up going to games at Kinnick and have been to more Cyhawk games there than I can remember. It's always a cool atmosphere and I've never had a big issue with fans other than the expected "**** state". Like others have said, go, have fun, don't be a prick yourself and you'll be fine. As much as I love some good smack talk, you're better off to just hold it in and not instigate.

Two demographics to avoid:
1. Frat Boys
2. anybody that looks remotely similar to this
