I am making a trip down to Austin this weekend. I have some openings on the itinerary. Looking for recommendations from CF for sweet places to see, do, eat at. Ready...Go.

-Tour the UT campus. Great Spanish architecture.

-Check out DKR. Just massive. Most impressive stadium I've been to, size wise.

-6th Street, 6th Street, and more 6th Street. There's live music in almost every bar at night. I can't remember all the places we went but there's a solid sports bar with open fronted windows that was very close to a laid back Irish pub that was a lot of fun. The Chuggin' Monkey was a damn good time, and while the crowd might get a little irritating, Maggie Mae's rooftop patio offers an incredible view of the city. Cheers' Shot Bar (of Tucker Max fame) makes some interesting drinks.

-Eat some street food. It was all really good.

I will echo what Al said, get dropped off on 6th street and get after it.

Are you driving down? It's Memorial Day weekend, and you will want to avoid I-35 between Dallas and Austin on Friday afternoon/evening. A 3.5 hour trip will turn into 6 hours with the high traffic. We are waiting until Saturday morning to go down for this very reason.

Also, if you want an awesome view of the entire campus, try to take a tour and go up in the UT Tower in the Memorial Union. I think it was only like 5 bucks and it takes maybe less than an hour, but the view is unreal!

There's quite a bit of stuff on Guadalupe right across from campus. The University Co-Op is over there if you want to shop or look for UT merchandise. Don't forget to visit the Church of Scientology too! :jimlad: Other than that, 6th Street is great for food. If you want amazing BBQ though, try to find a Rudy's (find a location here) somewhere in Austin. Can't go wrong!

You owe it to yourself to check out "Oasis" on Lake Travis. Its basically on the side of a cliff. Its insane.
The OASIS Restaurant- Sunset Capital of Texas
(Wait till it scrolls to the picture of the decks and umbrellas)

Also, 6th street is definitely cool.
I thought the Rainey street district was cool too. A lot of really old houses that were converted into bars.
Also, the food trailors are awesome.
Ive never seen more bars in any city than I saw in Austin Tx. Its mind boggling. I loved it.

Almost forgot Rudy's. Definitely get some moist brisket from Rudy's. Served on Texas china! (a piece of wax paper. ha)

Definitely snag a fried avocado taco from Torchy's taco truck on South 1st St. If it's nice out, head to the Barton Springs pool, which is a sweet swimming spot on the river. Very relaxing. Also, try and check out Emo's for music. Great venue.

Also, eat dinner some night at the Hula Hut. It's northwest of downtown on the lake. Godd food, better views.

Is Hula Hut back open? I know it caught fire recently and maybe it was just the outside deck that closed.

I also second eating at Rudy's and going to 6th street is a must!

I was there in April. Really liked the Hula Hut. Didnt hurt that it was 40 degrees and raining in Iowa that weekend and 85 degrees and sunny in Austin.

Trudy's for migas. Chuy's for good food and tequila. Black Star co-op brewery (although I've never been there but next time I'm in Austin I'll check it out). LBJ library is pretty cool, lots of history. 6th St. as everyone else has mentioned.

There are so many bars/restaurants and live music is everywhere, you don't really need any help finding stuff to do there.

^^^ this on wearing ISU shirt.

Agree with previous posts about 6th street. Lots of great music, bars, and food. If you're into music, stop by Stubb's: great BBQ, and it's cool to see all the concert posters of great bands they've had play there. They get some killer shows there, but I'd recommend bar hopping on 6th, very few have cover so you can check out 4 or 5 bands in a night if you want to.

There's a Korean Taco truck downtown somewhere that is really good. Hula Hut was nice but quite busy. There were a lot of young females there when I visited.
