Backing into parking spots

It is ingrained in me as an old letter carrier who was mandated to always back in while parking. It’s so easy using your mirrors that I never pull forward anymore. I absolutely always try and find a spot that I can pull straight through though.

I would add that I bet on average it takes longer to back in than it does to back out. I've waited quite a while at times for people trying to back in and it takes them several tries to get it right.

For that reason, and for many other reasons.. I almost always will park really far out where there's very few other vehicles so that I can pull through. Mostly due to ease (and way less annoying!), and I can ALWAYS use the exercise.

What is up with people that feel they HAVE to always back into parking spots? Any of you out there that can explain this? I have nothing against it, just find it odd and interesting.

I will say... I will try to find spots in parking lots where I can just "pull through" the spot and into the the spot opposite of it because it does make it easier to leave... but that doesn't require backing up into it.

We have neighbors on our street that ALWAYS back their vehicles up into their garage even. Have never seen them just pull in normally.
Military thing for me. Park so that if you have to leave in a hurry you can without backing up. Plus I like my vehicles dress right dress in the driveway. I know I am a goober but some habits you just cant get rid of.

Just come to one of our masses. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is more expert on backing into parking spots than us Catholics. You can hear the tires squealing as soon as communion is over.

(Note: this is harmless self deprecating humor that is not intended to cave this thread)

And by longer, we're talking seconds. It amazes me on how precious seconds are to some people.

Not exactly sure.
Anything besides our RAv I back in. Get that douche who gives you 8 inches besides your vehicle or the person across from you that leaves 4 foot in the front of their spot and it’s almost impossible to back a pickup or suburban out of its spot.

Only if you suck at backing up.

That whole “peace” thing is forgotten by the time people hit the parking lot

This is the only time it bothers me. Our church lot people do this when 10 people are trying to find spots and inevitably there is someone trying to back in that can't get it right the first time, so all the rest of us have to wait. Good news is it's a church lot so I'm super holy and patient at the moment.
This. 99% of all parking problems in Iowa are caused by dipshits in their gigantic suburbans and Silverados that they can’t handle or park. So they take forever to back in, clog **** up and still end up all wonky taking up two spots.

Sometime I will, sometimes I won't with my work truck. All depends on the lot and the situation.

My place in washington I backed in to my driveway because I could use the backup camera to get in relatively tight against the garage door to keep the nose of the truck out of the sidewalk. With the uphill angle on the driveway and it's short length, and the stupid tall hood on the chevy trucks it was easier to see. Plus there are lots of little kids in my neighborhood who love to shoot down the street on bikes so leaving it's better for me.

My temp place in the UP I also back in off the alley. The angles just work better for me. Now with the snow I can also see where I'm going when leaving and not worry about trying to back up with through the heavier snow.

Most store parking lots I just pull straight in (or even better just pull straight through).

I always back in at kids' sporting events. After games, there are too many kids on phones, kids kicking balls in the parking lot, younger siblings not being watched, and jerks that think they need to rush out. I want all of that in front of me.

My garage is narrow so I have to back in one vehicle and pull the other one in forward. I hug the walls on both. That leaves enough space to get out of and into the vehicles without dinging doors.

In lots, I do like to pull through so facing out whenever possible.

I was in a parking lot fender bender about 4 years ago. Backing out and the other vehicle was across and a space down. I stopped when I saw him coming and honked to try to get him to stop. But it didn't work. He was 80 percent deaf AND had his radio on. Backed right into me. People in the store coming out afterwards commented on "oh, that's what the honking was about."

Called cops. Accident report said he's 100 percent at fault. His insurance wanted me to accept 50% responsibility. I fought it long and hard and finally got it right. **** All-State - their company IS Mayhem for a safe driver insured by someone else.

Long story short, since then I'm ultra careful and slow backing out of spaces so have no problem with people who want to back in.

Plus, those Crew Cab vehicles with the full length bed AND the extra 18" inches of trailer hitch out the back are a hazard in lots.

Please don't pull through spaces with angled parking. You end up going the wrong way down the aisle when you leave.

Yes, yes, a billion times yes. I can’t stand seeing people back into angled spots, or pull through so they’re pointing the wrong direction. Just a total lack of self-awareness or any consideration that there are other people using that parking lot besides you.
