Will back into the driveway if I know snow is incoming. I think it is easier to get out of the driveway and ensures i don't have to stop to change directions when backing out. I will back in if the parking lot is tight(at work). Otherwise, I typicaly pull in and back out. I feel there is less chance of backing into the cars on either side if I back out as opposed to backing in. I will always pull through if at all possible.

Or to signal to those behind you intend to stop or back up or to indicate disabled vehicle or getting pulled over by police or unloading/loading passengers...etc.

Most drivers do not utilize their hazard blinkers, but it doesn't surprise me. Heck, a lot of drivers struggle mightily just to use their turn signal when switching lanes or even when their about to turn.
Used to be a MV violation in Iowa, to drive down the road with hazard lights flashing. Not uncommon to see this today. The reason it was unlawful is because people could know that someone was likely having trouble, and to proceed with caution because their vehicle could be at a dead stop (Also for law enforcement safety).

Hear too often today of people not respecting the use of hazard flashers and having accidents with stopped vehicles. Two of my neighbors lost their lives in such an accident.

I started backing in when I worked in the oilfield and it was a job site requirement to back in, so in case of emergency you could quickly pull out. Now I just do it out of habit.

I don't mind people who back in, however the people who back in while someone is driving behind them and still back in, making that person wait, are the worst.

This is the correct answer. I don't care one bit how anyone chooses to park. But watching someone do a 17 point turn to back into a spot when it's aisle parking and you can't get around them in absolutely infuriating.

I drive a truck and it is easier for me to back into a spot than it is to pull in. My truck is old enough it doesn't have a backup camera but it is still easier for me to back in. I figure either way I will have to back up at some point, when I leave or park, so I don't see it safer one way or another. It is just easier for me, that's why I do it.

I am much more likely to back in to something when I am trying to back in to a parking spot or a garage or whatever. Reverse is tough for me; thus, I pull in to parking spots and SLOWLY back out.

But, for those with reverse gear talent, more power to you!

When i'm in my truck, i will always back into a parking space if there is nobody waiting behind me. It's easier to maneuver into a tight space, and you have much better visibility when you leave (oncoming cars, shopping carts, people backing out of other spaces, etc.).

However, I'm pretty sure the guys with the giant turbo-diesel pickups back into parking spaces in case they need to quickly chase off ANTIFA.

I used to work at a place that required back-in parking and it sort of became a habit. I don't do it anymore but I don't begrudge anyone who does.

I like people that back in or pull through then complain about the car behind them is too close and they can’t access their trunk

I always pull into a spot when I go into the gym. At 5 am you don't have a lot of issues. When I left at around 6:15 the SUV next to probably had done the same, except only left around 2' between vehicles. I I just flipped their passenger mirror in, in order to get into my vehicle and it still was tough to get into my car.

I can't prove if they pulled through or backed up though to park. Depth perception plays a factor in parking too. The older you get the worse it gets. Ever look at handicapped spots and notice how crazy some people park with no one around them?

I'm sorry to hear that. This is a total pet peeve of mine. I see people driving down the interstate at a relatively normal speed with their hazards on all the time. I normally would let off the accelerator to give them the ability to get to the shoulder, but anymore they're just driving longterm with them on because maybe it is raining/snowing (hazards help no one in this scenario) or perhaps they just forgot. Obviously I'm fine with tractors or slow moving vehicles putting on their hazard blinkers in appropriate areas.

When I hit stop and go traffic after proceeding at full highway speeds I’ll throw hazards on for a moment until cars behind me realize we’re not slowing down from 65-70+ but at a full stop.

Trying to help fellow motorists and not die myself.

I do this too. I like to think it helps. Haven't died yet :jimlad:

What is up with people that feel they HAVE to always back into parking spots? Any of you out there that can explain this? I have nothing against it, just find it odd and interesting.

I will say... I will try to find spots in parking lots where I can just "pull through" the spot and into the the spot opposite of it because it does make it easier to leave... but that doesn't require backing up into it.

We have neighbors on our street that ALWAYS back their vehicles up into their garage even. Have never seen them just pull in normally.

"I will try to find spots in parking lots where I can just "pull through" the spot and into the spot opposite..." thus giving the appearance of backing in. But then you whine that people actually back in? This might be the weirdest complaint I've seen today. It's also one of the most Iowa-things ever to complain about.

So if I’m driving my truck in a narrow parking lot and I’d have to pull in and back out several times to get in, what should I do? It’s faster for me to back in the first time than to pull in 1/3 the way into a spot then backing out then pulling in again. You’re still waiting in both situations.

Practice in an empty lot with cones until you've got it figured out.

Aren't we to the point were cars are going to just do this for you if you tell it too?
