I have seen bobcats around this area several times in the past. I wouldn't call it a common occurrence, but certainly not rare.

Though I will say I haven't seen them before in town usually it is around the Cedar River Green Belt area.

The Rockwell Collins Campus is only 2 miles from the edge of Cedar Rapids. Not terribly surprising. About 3 or 4 years ago there was a wild turkey that would block traffic on the street in front of Rockwell for over a month.

That's a lot of public area to cover for an animal not interested in human interaction. Deer or turkeys I can see, but a bobcat that far into the city, I would be a little surprised. If so, the thing must be starving and desperate.

Not to mention a lot of neighborhoods to go through.

i would be super surprised because Iowa is one of 4-5 states that Bobcats don't live in. Iowa doesn't have great bobcat habitat.

Edit: of course someone could of illegal brought one and it escaped. I just think it could be a cause of false identification.

There are bobcats in Iowa, but they are seldom seen. Usually hunters will come across them in ravines and forested areas.

I do know the DNR are trying to reintroduce Bobcats to the midwest. Iowa is probably one of those states. So you could be very much right about seeing them these days.

Wrong. This is from the Iowa DNR:

"At the brink of being wiped out in Iowa just a few decades ago, the bobcat has staged a major comeback in the state."

We just had a patient in the office that is claiming there is a Bobcat on the loose and roaming around the main Rockwell Collins campus.

What?

Personally, I'm hoping it's a Cougar.

Is that what those dozens of people gathered on the B.F. Road sidewalk multiple times a day are looking at?

Correct. The population is high enough now that the DNR opened hunting and trapping seasons for bobcats several years ago. They are most common in the southern and northeast portions of the state.

Holy crap, if that was on the Rockwell campus, that's scary. That thing could really ruin someone's day.

We have one that hangs out near a trail near us in southern Iowa. Drives the 90 pound dog crazy barking at it and then it scampers. Wish it would come hunt some rabbits in our yard, we have an abundance. I think one got picked off by a fox the other night though. Dog barking like crazy, see a fox heading south, find a rabbit missing its head and a leg in the back yard the next day.

I think this is the one that was hanging out by Casey's on Center Pt Rd and 32nd St. He made the rounds.
