Sports Illustrated interviewed him this week for their issue. One of the questions was
"Do you think that kids want to play in a conference?" (referring to Notre Dame football)

He replied: "Ask Texas if they'd like to go to Iowa State every other year. Look, I could take our football team anywhere in the country and that is attractive to a young man if he knows he can play in different destinations of a conference affiliate can get worn and old, and in the recruiting process I can pitch national, and that helps us.

Thoughts?

He said a similar thing on the Dan Patrick show a couple weeks ago. He's letting Pollard know the mistake JP made by not hiring him.

It was in the section of SI that is a transcript of the interview from the radio. Just saw it myself a couple of hours ago. At least it wasn't a new interview, just a rehashing.

I have heard him talk about the ND situation he in inherited. He made an interesting comment about too many guys on the team not really there to play for ND but rather there playing for a higher NFL draft position.

I found it interesting that it appears Weis' approach of "I'm an NFL guy with NFL contacts that can put you into the NFL" seems to have backfired on him at ND. He always got great players but never seemed to have a great team. Maybe too many mercenary types just worried about themselves and their draft status instead of wanting to play for ND.

You absolutely need talent to compete but the best collection of talent does not always equal the best team...witness the fact that the US has not won the gold in every olympic MBB tournament since pros have been playing for us and witness the fact that the Yankees don't win the WS every year.

My thought is to be patient. CPR will end backhanded comments like this. Being able to set your own schedule is an advantage for ND but it's not an accident that BK mentioned ISU. It's pretty comical to me that he even cares (he obviously does, a lot). Does this mean he's going to put UT on the schedule? I'd love to see UT, NU or OU kick ND's ***. I'd like to see us get that chance...

I'd still take Rhoads anyday over Kelly. I don't see him turning ND around much at all.

While I'm very happy we now have CPR, nobody can make any accurate prediction about what Kelly would have done had we hired him. He might have found Ames a great place to raise his young family and stayed a long time, who knows?

Here's the thing - we flat out ASSUME that Kelly would have had insta-success here at ISU simply because he turned it so quick at Cincinnati. I don't necessarily think that's the case. First off, it's not like he was left with a train wreck at Cincinnati like he would have been at ISU - Dantonio was doing a hell of a job there and was hired away to take over Michigan St, which was what opened up the 'Nati in the first place. Second, once Kelly found out just how difficult it is to win here, he would have been on the first train out ala Chizik. He might have won a few more games here and there that Chizik lost due to straight up coaching lunacy, but I figure Kelly wouldn't have been significantly more successful in those two years.

Kelly didn't have the connections Chizik had and would have had to win some games before getting hired away from ISU.

The Chizik fiasco was a perfect sh-t storm where, despite total ineptitude, the Chiz ended up with a fat check. Luckily, I think we are better off in the end.

Kelly would not have had anywhere near the talent at ISU that he had at Cinci. He would have struggled and possibly not have had the same amount of success in 09 that CPR did.

We are lucky for the talent that Chizik recruited and that CPR was able to coach them better than Gene ever did.

I am interested to see how much success Kelly has at ND. It will not be an easy job and he will constantly be under the microscope. I think if he is able to recruit some good talent, that he should be able to coach them better than Weis and win some more games.
