Was just watching John Walters' OU preview on cyclones.tv and it showed a clip of #20 firing up the guys in the pregame huddle before Baylor. He looked a bit emotional, but the best part for me was seeing younger brother Luke run to Jake and exchange a hug as soon as the huddle broke. Very cool, and I'm guessing it will resonate more with those guys who have a brother who is close in age.

20 needs to be retired.
Honestly, I think this is an interesting conversation. I had this thought not long after it was confirmed that he played against BU knowing he was having season-ending surgery following the game, taking his full career into consideration. My next thought was that you don't want to start retiring jersey numbers willy-nilly. You need to be very selective.

As a 31 year old, I feel like Jake would be deserving based on my Cyclone knowledge, post 1989/Blaise Bryant era. But I'm sure the old-timers would have a number of guys they would also throw into the mix, so the pool of candidates could grow rather large. Without having sat in JTS and watched those guys prior to the Walden era, it's hard to say who would be deserving.

But I agree with the sentiment. Would be interested to hear more opinions. If Jake could find a place among say 3 to 5 deserving Cyclones, I could go along with the idea of retiring jersey numbers, including #20. If it was many more than that, I'm not sure it's a "select" enough group.

The number 20 may very well end up being "unofficially" retired. Just like the #28 and #30. No player has worn 28 since the Troy Davis days, and I can't remember the last 30, I believe in respect for the Dirty Thirty.

No reason to retire his number. Let others wear it with pride and add to the legacy

I wouldn't mind retiring numbers but I do like what Michigan has done. What they have done is make certain numbers an honor to wear. They have a patch with the former players name on it. The jersey's are awarded to younger kids who are deemed worthy. I like that. It keeps the number out there but it's also an honor to wear it. The down side is those players are likely to create their own legacy without having a number associated with it but I suppose you could just add another name. If I were a former player I would love to be able to see a kid worthy running around in my old number.

Is Nealy wearing #20 an indication of his future? He has the opportunity to do something special with time. I guess it is a double edged sword when we have such a deep backfield. It is hard to have another 1000 or 2000 yard rusher when we have 4 RBs who carry the ball a game plus a dual threat type QB.

I just think if you retire 20 then you have to retire 47 as well. I know many on here aren't soccer fans but traditionally the best player is given the number 10 or 7. Why not make that the case with this situation and try to carry on and add to the legacy of the number 20 and possibly 47. Either way these guys will be remembered forever. They helped jump start a nearly dead program.

The number pair #20 and #47, the best Linebacker tandem, at Iowa State.
Only the inside linebackers worthy, must be a leaders, team players, they go All Out, and are "Great" defensive players. When you play at ISU only the best are AWARDED the Honor to wear number 20 and 47.

Use it as a recruiting tool, "Are you good enough to WEAR #20 or #47 at ISU."
Can you continue the Legacy started by Knott and Klein?

I think if Luke wants to wear it, that's fine, but something tells me that he's more interested in creating his own legacy than being "Jake Jr.". I can somewhat relate to the situation, as my brother and I are VERY close in age (1.5 years), and when he was going through college it was important to him to be perceived as his own person, and not just a slightly different version of me, especially because he decided to go to ISU after growing up a Hawk fan, so there was an immediate perception that he was just following me. I think a lot of guys feel this way, especially if they are that close in age to their older brothers.

In terms of retiring numbers, I like Tre's idea of making it an honor to wear a legendary player's number, but don't necessarily "retire" it.

We don't retire numbers in football, but "jerseys" are sometimes retired as a symbol. The team is just too big and over time the retiring of numbers could make it tough.

We could use the #20 jersey just like aTm uses the #12 jersey every week.
