Quick overview: My brother and i run a Facebook page that has drawn a lot of interest. It's only been up for about 8 weeks and we have around 5,000 followers. We have tons of requests for decals and hats/apparel with our logo on it. We're trying to effectively figure out a way to offer this. Anybody with experience in doing something like this?

What's the page? If you're interested in merchandise a quick Google search will tell you where order that stuff. I'd make sure you have orders in hand so production runs are cheaper for you.

The page is called Trophy Bucks of Iowa. Iowa has some of the largest whitetail deer in the world so we have outdoorsmen from all over requesting stuff.

I've ordered probably 12 different runs of t-shirts and sweatshirts for old bands and a few hats here and there. We paid about 6 or 7/shirt for multicolor and 4/shirt with one color if I remember correctly.

not specific advice but, make sure you are in love w/ your logo and that it is good for hats or stickers. I had a buddy that paid a bunch for a logo and it looked like crap on hats so then he wanted to change it but already had a bunch of crap with the old logo on it.

other thing is i follow a lot of instagram pages for various things, seems like the second the started selling stickers/hats etc thats all the posted about or they brought it up in every post, this caused a lot of people to complain and unfollow including me.

one other thing, why are people so excited to post their big bucks on fb or the internet in general....the last thing I want is people knowing where I shot a monster or that I shot a big buck. I know a guy that posted a trail cam pic of a buck he had on private ground and opening day a group of county sheriffs/town cops trespassed on the ground and shot the buck, then went on fb, took the trail cam pic the guy posted and put it with the dead buck pic.

People like to brag, and they dont normally say where they shot it or where the trail pic is from. Obviously there is a demand, the site has been growing like crazy. I agree about trying to sell stuff in every post, thats not our intent.

I second this. Some logos look great on paper or on a business card but not so much on clothing or signs. If it has a lot of small details it can look different. Especially if sewn on something.

We have a logo and have had samples of decals, and they look great. That is the issue, a lot of followers like how it looks and have been asking where to buy them. We never anticipated people wanting this stuff.

To build on this, consider scan/fax quality, too. This may not apply to something growing out of a FB fan page, but it is something to consider when designing a business graphic.

Congratulations on creating a concept with strong demand. That's half the battle right there!

I came down from my mountaintop to offer up some of my exalted opinions (sarcasm pirate needed?), based on hard-earned experience starting up Kagavi & going to trade shows, etc.

I went to your Facebook page and looked at the logo, and came up with these thoughts:

  • If the deer was traced from a photo that you don't own, change it. Artists have lost court cases when they created a logo traced from another person's photo without securing permission. (First one I can think of is Shepard Fairey & the Obama HOPE poster.)

  • The triple color outline is needlessly complex and WILL create issues at smaller sizes, plus add to cost.

  • Font is crooked in relation to the state outline.

  • Font choice has legibility issues at smaller sizes, which is an issue given that many people access web via mobile. (For ex: pictures used for decal post, the "of" is nearly unreadable.)

  • State outline doesn't look connected to deer head. Seem to be two different logos. I would change the thickness of the state outline.

  • I'm glad to help with the logo, free of charge. This is something I've done for others behind the scenes, as a way to keep my skills sharp. Just let me know. Already have some ideas on how to slightly revise it and keep what you have already created.

As for the business and printing shirts, etc. More thoughts:

  • Be prepared for Facebook to severely throttle/limit your access and reach once it's apparent you are a biz. Your visibility will be reduced by as much as 90% and you will be pestered to purchase ads, etc. Diversify to Twitter and Instagram and other platforms to reduce the risk of being reliant on one platform.

  • I would look into creating a Tumblr page with a slightly custom skin to serve as your business website. It doesn't need to have the address of bizname.tumblr.com, but can be bizname.com, but pointing to the Tumblr page. This will reduce any need of dealing with your own servers, etc.

  • I would recommend TeeSpring for a way to offer preorders on shirts without having to deal with inventory, etc. You will take a reduced cut, however, you will not be stuck with inventory management, shipping, etc. They deal with all of that and you get a check. This will allow you to gauge popularity of certain things and see just how big your consumer base is before entering into any potentially costly merchandise agreements.

Starting a biz is very exciting and I'm excited for you.

Resist the temptation to go with the very first idea, etc. when working with designs, logos, etc. My first logo for Kagavi was AWFUL, but I threw something up there because I was paralyzed with indecision and needed to move on. After a few months, a much more superior concept came to me, which is the current one.

Just some thoughts. You are obviously already doing great. Congrats again.
