Re: Cam Newton to be suspended by NCAA

I think you nailed it TAZ -- Also, I'll be amazed if he is suspended. Assuming they can link anything to Auburn (these SEC booster know how to cheat - lots of practice) ......These cases take years to ensure they have the witnesses and evidence they need. Mid-season suspension for a non-felony ain't a gonna happen. It's the safest most conservative approach. If true, you can always get them later.

Honestly, rebeca, half the time I have no idea what you're trying to say.

But why does a vacated win not equal a vacated loss?

Vacating wins is about punishing the rule-violators, not justice/retribution for the victims. It's easy to agree that Newton has an incredible impact on the Auburn team (he's starting QB, so he better damn well have an impact). However, how can anyone say with confidence how a game would have turned-out if Newton hadn't played? Our win at NU last year is a nice illustration of how we can't just assume an outcome based on if a top player (or players) is playing in a particular game.

Changing losses to wins could cause farther-reaching implications for schools totally unconnected to the infringing program. This could easily cause those unconnected programs to be punished without having done anything wrong. What if Auburn's wins were transferred to their opponents, and the resulting win-loss records affected ISU's bowl placement? Why should we get Chizzed again when we are unconnected to the Cam Newton fiasco?

I could see an argument, though, for letting a 5-7 team travel to a a bowl if one of their losses was vacated by the winning team. In this case there will (fingers crossed) be a spot opening up due to vacating wins.

I'm mostly of this opinion, however, after watching that 30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree last night, you have to wonder how much control a kid like that really has of their situation.

To an extent, I agree, especially if boosters are going to the parents and paying them without the student's "knowledge". However, in Newton's case, he certainly had A LOT of control over his academic eligibility at Florida. Without his issues at Florida, he's probably not in this situation right now.

His cheating at Florida has nothing to do with NCAA violations though. Icould be wrong but by going JUCO, he cleared up any academic issues. If he was academically eligible coming from JUCO, the cheating is a non issue.

I didn't see it, so I don't know the particular situation there, but I do know one thing. If daddy is paying for my education, he gets a say in where I'm going, but if I'm getting a virtual all expense paid education to my choice of schools, dad isn't choosing for me. Newton knows exactly what was happening and what the ramifications would be if caught.

That's actually not my point.

My point is if he kept up with his studies at Florida, he wouldn't have been tossed from Florida in the first place, and we wouldn't have had this "This really great JUCO QB will play at your school - asking price $200K".

This theory is way off. If he is found to have been bought, he will be suspended and it won't matter which part of the season they are in. You can keep hoping Chizik get's out of this, but in the end, if Newton is found have been dirty, there will be a suspension and Auburn will be hit with lack of institutional control. The NCAA isn't messing around with this anymore. If you think they are going to wait on it, you are wrong. They waited on Bush and that was a mistake.

Correct, IF he is proven to be cheating, the NCAA will suspend him. However, it takes a lot of time to 100% prove that he accepted cash from a booster. I doubt that happens this season, but if they have been investigating it for a couple months, like it has been reported, then it is possible.

The NCAA isn't waiting for anything, they are just trying to build a solid case, if one is there to build.

Does anyone else see this as possibly bad news for ISU? If Auburn did arrange payment, Chiz is gunna be gone. One would think Rhoads would be on Auburn's short list to replace him.

Can we stop with CPR leaving crap? He's not leaving.

what's really messed up is the SEC west Alabama is the only
contender that hasn't played Auburn. If Alabama beats MSU
and a Cam-less Auburn. Alabama could end in a tie with 6-2 LSU
that lost to Auburn and Alabama. Basically Auburn cheating
giving the SEC west to Alabama.

I think you worry far too much. If this actually did go down, Auburn is going to be smacked with A LOT of probation. Auburn ain't USC, and CPR ain't Lane Kiffin - Auburn is going to be nuclear and it won't be that "right" scenario that pulls CPR away from ISU.

um...LSU beat Alabama. I'm pretty sure an 11-1 LSU will take the West if Auburn is disqualified.
