A lot has been said already about Coach Campbell and the roster turnover that has already occurred before Year 1 even starts. What is also interesting though are the changes to the makeup of the roster itself. The big takeaways for me are the increased number of DBs and decreased number of LBs and OLs. The 2 former I imagine are to better fit the 4-2-5 scheme. I don't imagine the drop in scholarship OLs is intentional and has more to do with the rash of injuries that position saw that forced a few guys to quit football early.

Quarterback
- 4 scholarship players in 2015 (+2 walk-ons)
- 3 scholarship players in 2016 (+3 walk-ons)
- 2 of 3 scholarship players are new (+2 new walk-ons)

Running Back
- 6 scholarship players in 2015 (+5 walk-ons)
- 4 scholarship players in 2016 (+7 walk-ons)
- 2 of 4 scholarship players are new (+3 new walk-ons)

Wide Receiver
- 14 scholarship players in 2015 (+4 walk-ons)
- 13 scholarship players in 2016 (+2 walk-ons)
- 4 of 13 scholarship players are new (+2 new walk-ons)

Tight End
- 2 scholarship players in 2015 (+3 walk-ons)
- 4 scholarship players in 2016 (+5 walk-ons)
- 3 of 4 scholarship players are new (+3 new walk-ons)

Offensive Line
- 18 scholarship players in 2015 (+5 walk-ons)
- 14 scholarship players in 2016 (+4 walk-ons)
- 5 of 14 scholarship players are new (+2 new walk-ons)

Defensive End
- 9 scholarship players in 2015 (+7 walk-ons)
- 10 scholarship players in 2016 (+4 walk-ons)
- 2 of 10 scholarship players are new (+2 new walk-ons)

Defensive Line
- 7 scholarship players in 2015 (+5 walk-ons)
- 7 scholarship players in 2016 (+2 walk-ons)
- 2 of 7 scholarship players are new (0 new walk-ons)

Linebacker
- 11 scholarship players in 2015 (+6 walk-ons)
- 7 scholarship players in 2016 (+5 walk-ons)
- 1 of 7 scholarship players are new (1 new walk-on)

Defensive Back
- 12 scholarship players in 2015 (+5 walk-ons)
- 17 scholarship players in 2016 (+5 walk-ons)
- 7 of 17 scholarship players are new (+2 new walk-ons)

Great info, thanks for posting this. Going forward, I'd expect, in comparison to CPR's recruiting:

1. More DBs
2. Less LBs - we were moving to the 3-4, now we are in a 4-2-5.
3. Less WRS - this is solely because we kept missing on recruits and signing extra WRs late.
4. More TEs

Way up there
TE and DB jump out the most, this staff brought in 6 new TE's total and 9 DB's. It'll be interesting to see how the TE is involved in the offense. We've had some really good TE's here lately but none that were used as a true TE, we basically used them as WR's.

You can only have 105 kids participate in fall workouts, so if we had 85 scholarship players, only 20 walkons can participate. However, once the season starts, you can have as many as you want. Once the season ends, you are back to 105 cap for off-season workouts.

That I understand. I just didn't know we had that many at each position. It's very interesting. Not expecting any of them to be contributors, just didn't know the numbers were that high.

Robins, Iowa
Seems like a lot of walk ons, but if you look at Iowa they have quite a few walk-ons and have fairly good luck with them contributing. I think sometimes teams let under sized or under developed players walk on to see if they are just a couple physically less mature. I have no issue with it, other than if you are not close to getting on the field by your junior year, you should probably hang it up and make room for younger walk-ons.

ISU has typically (the last decade at least) carried about 120 - 135 squad members, or 35 - 50 walk-ons. Fall camp is usually the scholarship players, returning walk-ons w/ playing time under their belt or strong potential, and incoming "preferred" walk-ons. Then returning walk-ons w/o playing time or legitimate potential for playing time soon and guys who tryout the first day of school join during the first week or so of school.

From what I recall, there is only a 105 cap during fall camp and all 120+ players take part in winter conditioning, spring ball, and summer workouts.

^That's really interesting information. I'd never really thought about walk-ons or anything like that. Cool stuff.

Is there there a site that actually says whether a player is on scholarship or a walk-on. The only way I have found is to manually look all of them up.

My son always told me he had the most respect for walk ons. He stated he didn't think he could go thru what they have to endure. I remember one outing at one of the coaches houses that the walk ons couldn't stay and eat because it would of been a NCAA violation. What a crop of bull.
When you meet a walk on. Thank him for his effort/contribution because he is there for the true love of the game. F**k the NCAA. Just saying.

I can attest that this isn't true. As a walkon I was allowed to do everything a scholarship player was except my school wasn't paid for. I lifted with the team, ate training table with the team, used the trainers like the rest of the team, etc.

I was at this event and walk ons left. My son said there were meals that they couldn't attend. Now, this was over the summer, so maybe that was the difference. Otherwise, maybe your school just cheated!!!!

true, but that would still be a time consuming task to compare your list of scholarship players against the full team roster

My guess is it was due to the summer or "additional meal" as there are some restrictions. I know they have modified the rules the last couple years to be more inclusive of walk ons regarding meals and snacks.

But i concur with your statement, tolfbfan, thank the walk ons. They are a big part of making the team better and at the end of the day have to cut a check for their school.

Maybe we did cheat but I ate at coaches houses during the summer. In fact the LB coach would have us over as a position group and grill out for us (walkons and scholarship guys).
