he doesn't have elite speed either. although most of his skill set would be considered elite: vision, balance, yac, catching ability, blitz pickup. his top speed will be pretty average for an NFL RB.

I don’t the answer to this but is he any slower than Ray Rice or Kareem Hunt?

I hate to see him go but it ultimately helps us in the long run. The more players you can put in the nfl the better recruits you are going to get.
For sure. Hopefully Breece Hall and/or Jirehl Brock can go next and CMC can start pointing to a trend of Iowa State RBs going on to play on Sundays.

I think anyone would recommend he go, but I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to come back.
I would be very surprised. The window for RBs to make money is shorter than any other position by far. And I think the only way for David to improve his draft stock is if the O-line takes a big step forward next year and his stats become even more eye popping and I don't see that happening.

Yes, if you assume going pro is his only priority. It's not totally unheard of that guys who would be better served going pro return, and David definitely seems like someone who may have different priorities than most.

If there's any justice, at least one of DM or HB should be drafted somewhere in the first round. Preferably both. It's time for the 1st round dry spell to be snapped.

Butler is a mid round guy, I actually think we have a pretty good shot at having him for another year. He will grade out really high at the combine but drops will still be a concern.

Interesting. I had a gut-level feeling he'll declare, but I'd love to have him back. I suppose I have a little bias about his draft potential. His big-play ability seems like it'd be attractive.

If he is considered mid-rounder and is advised properly, it could be best to wait until 2019.

I make these assessments with only limited grasp of NFL draft nuances.

I honestly feel David needs to declare for the draft after the season. That being said, I don't see him as a 1st round pick. I'm hoping a 2nd but IMO, he'll be a 3rd rounder.

As always with the draft...DM's selection will likely correspond to a team's need when selecting. RB's seem to be selected when there is a need...unlike other positions when teams seem to select the best player available regardless of position. So that might limit his chances early...unless there is a team that thinks they are a RB away from the playoffs!

The CBS report referenced in this post has Butler in the top 60 players (58)...with Montgomery 60.

This. The Texas game will be great film for him. First half they killed us then second half Montgomery helped so much.

Several NFL teams have been burned over the past decade taking “big play” college WRs. I’m thinking the Raiders and Minny specifically but I feel like there are more.

Butler is a good blocker imo though but not sure if that really matters in the NFL.

It seems like they do nitpick stuff most of us wouldn't consider.

Regarding turnovers, is that also a valued consideration — that is, ball security? How many times has DM fumbled at ISU, regardless of it ended as turnover or not (and even counting the Liberty Bowl non-fumble as a fumble)? Anybody know?

To me that would be among his strongest traits, along with how hard he is to bring down, plus elusive ability. I'm sure other RBs are preferable for pure speed.

I can only recall 2 -- the Liberty Bowl "thing," and the KSU game this year where he fumbled into the end zone then recovered his own fumble.

Maybe there was one from his freshman year I can't think of.

Montgomery would not be smart to come back. He’s battled injuries the last 2 years because of how bad the offensive line is. Another year behind that line could kill his NFL career. From a fan standpoint, I would love him back, but it’s in his best interest to declare for the draft. He’s a second rounder at worst.

Agree. Listening to some early draft talk and looking at early mock drafts, this is a weak RB class. Right now a lot are predicting there won't be a RB drafted in the first round.

I'm selfish, I want him and Hakeem back.... but if I were them and had the chance I'd go too

Dave can still graduate. I can't think of a better way to facilitate one's life goals than to begin by making a bunch of money in the NFL. I welcome DM entering the draft if he wants to. He'll be an ambassador for ISU forever. My advice would be go for it...but make damn sure you have a really good agent.

What if one of his life goals is to bring ISU a championship?

While I want both DM and HB back for obvious reasons, both need to ignore my selfishness and go get their money.
