I'm surprised it wasn't more.
I had a friend years ago that was in advertising (think still is) and somehow ended up doing some voice work for a few commercials as some 'side work'. One 10ish second segment made him $60,000.
His argument for that kind of pay out was that he had to say his part a bunch of times. A bunch of us at the time had odd/general jobs in customer service so we flipped him all sorts of **** since we all said the same things over a year's time and didn't make that much.
To add to this, for most people in the entertainment industry for acting, voicework, singing, dancing, etc.; their work usually comes in waves. They may have a busy couple of months, and then nothing for a couple of months. Consistent work is hard for people in this industry. Even people who hit lightening in a bottle for a couple of years may get into a string of bad movies and their star fades just as quickly. On the flip side, you have people who never had a big hit and are just doing commercials or being background characters.
So for your friend, he had an awesome side gig, but if that was his only job, that 60k may have had to last him for a couple months before he found another gig.
