I decided to upgrade my internet speed to 100mbps, based off the fact that my wife and I will be working form home soon. I opted for the self install, because I already have centurylink installed in my house.

Now here is the issue, my new modem requires me to connect a DSL cable to a phone jack. I don't have any phone service at my house. My existing modem has a CAT5E Ethernet cable plugged into the WAN LAN jack. This Ethernet cable runs from my modem to the exterior of my house to a box on the side of my house. I tried plugging this cable into my new modem replicating the existing set up, but it did not work. Can anyone give me some help with this? Can I convert this CAT5e cable to DSL with some kind of converter?

Phone line is the same as Cat5e just using less pairs. So in theory you could cut the connector off and put on a phone connector. In practice, this is hard, I have done it, but you need a crimping tool. Can you just get a new modem that has an ethernet input? Seems odd that it is expecting a phone back input in 2020.
