**** yeah. Not the 16 teamer I wanted but this will do. More access for G5 and seasons not ending after 1 or 2 games is best for the sport
This 100%. Right now your season is over right away if you're G5 at all or if you're P5 and lose in the non con, with you likely needing to win out in conference to get in. Now you can actually get better through the year and not have a week 1 loss define your season
You can still do it in the current schedule framework.
CCGs - Dec. 3
1st round - Dec. 10
Quarterfinals - Dec. 20-22
Semifinals - Dec. 31
Championship - Jan. 9
The schedule should look something like:
- Week 14 (Typically Thanksgiving & Black Friday Weekend)- Rivalry weekend
- Week 15 (Typically 1st weekend in Dec)- Conference Championship weekend and selection Sunday
- Week 16 (Typically 2nd weekend in Dec) - Army/Navy
- Week 17 (Typically 3rd weekend in Dec) - Lower tier bowl games begin
- Week 18 (Typically 4th weekend in Dec) - First round of playoffs, may need to adjust for Xmas
- Week 19 (New Years Weekend) - Second Round of Playoffs, may need to adjust for NYD
- Week 20 - National Championship Monday
Just need to shift the first round back one weekend to make room for Army/Navy. But yeah, pretty much this.
Also, this confirms neither the Pac 12 or Big 12 really has a shot at dying. Even if we raided the Pac they still have an auto bid to lure in SMU or MW teams ecen if the payouts end up similar

are you convinced there are 68 true title contenders for the NCAA mens basketball tourney? there aren't, but it is the greatest sports event the US has to offer.
I’m surprised more people here aren’t happy about this. It has to be better than the current 4 team playoff for the Big12 and this gives 6 spots to conference champs. There were also some quotes from the SEC commissioner not long ago asking why they would give any spots at all to conference champs and why not just make it all the top 12 (or top 16, etc) regardless of conference results. This strikes me as almost a best case outcome for the Big12 (and Pac12, ACC, etc) compared to the other options that were on the table.
Agreed. There won’t be as many cinderellas in football because of the nature of the sport but I bet there will still be some. Like when Boise St beat Oklahoma in a bowl game. Just imagine how cool that would have been if that had been a playoff game instead.
Assuming the new CFP TV rights will be split among two entities (Fox/ESPN), they can stagger start times and still schedule around Army/Navy.
11:30 ET - CFP Round 1 Game 1 (Fox)
12:00 ET - CFP Round 1 Game 2 (ESPN)
3:00 ET - Army/Navy (CBS) [moving this back to 3:30 wouldn't be a big deal, I suspect]
7:00 ET - CFP Round 1 Game 3 (Fox)
8:00 ET - CFP Round 1 Game 4 (ESPN)
And the Heisman presentation can bump back a week (Dec. 17), when the only thing going on is the entry-level bowls.
I think they will milk it more than that. I'm thinking the four games will be played over 2 days w/o any overlap. In fact I'm almost sure of it. MO' Money!

Only way I see playoff expansion earlier than 2026 is if ESPN agrees to allow the non final four games to go up for bid. The current contract essentially is for a four team playoff and I think it would be unfair and unrealistic to rebid the semi finals and finals, just let ESPN have those for the price they agreed to when the contract was signed. Bid out the quarterfinals and first round games for the next few years until the contract expires and then everything comes up for bid again.

To the extent this leads to do-nothing, highly compensated, "non-profit" bowl execs getting tossed aside, I say great.
I do hope they think about what to do with the remaining bowl games though, so they don't become complete afterthoughts any more than they already are.
