They are seeing the speed of the college game first hand right now and will be better next year for it. They might not be here as many years but they will be better as sophomores than they would be as RSFr with no playing experience.

I have been out of the loop a little but why aren't they red shirting? Its seems like a wasting a year of eligibility for two promising players if they are only going to play in garbage time when we are already down three players. But I hope Fred proves me wrong.
Because 1) if Morris has a serious injury then ISU has no true PG on their roster and 2) if Morris keeps progressing as he is, he'll be gone after his junior year and Custer will need some experience.

Anybody that thinks Custer's meaningful playing time is going to go up as the year goes on is completely wrong. Nader & Thomas come back, McKay moves Hogue to the 3 a bit more and Fred shortens up the rotation, if anything, as the year goes on.

Completely wrong? I think it's safe to say it's a complete guessing game at this point.

Nah it will go up, just like Morris last year. Only difference is Custer won't get as many minutes, or start. But he will play more than he is now.

I think it's starting to show Fred is planning on going to an 8 man rotation (Monte, Nader, BDJ, Hogue, Niang, Naz, Thomas, McKay) once McKay is eligible and Edozie and Custer will get spot minutes when needed

a few weeks ago Fred said he would have a rotation figured out by conference play. 9 or 10 guys.

Nobody knows, but I bet you're wrong. Once they get into conference play they're going to need two capable point guards. Morris isn't going to play forty minutes a game, and while I trust some of the other guys (BDJ, Niang, Naz) to bring the ball up the floor here and there I wouldn't want any of them to do it for long stretches.

You said need two capable pgs. I am guessing those that think Custer won't really be in the rotation would not disagree. The question is whether Custer is a capable pg this year. It is reasonable to have doubts on that.

We got by without a pg in Year 2 and no back-up pg in Year 3. If Custer is not ready, he will not play and Fred will use match-ups fill the need.

Way up there
Here we go again with "PG" label, we have 4 "PG's" that start. If you need it simplified down to "the guy who dribbles the ball up the court is the PG", then you haven't watched Hoiball. Custer is only in competition for playing time with SDW and Edozie IMO. Being listed as a PG on the program won't ( and shouldn't) have anything to do with seeing the floor.

Custer shouldn't have RS'd, the Greek probably should have, if only for the fact that he's tossing a year of eligibility away. Its only been 2 games but he just doesn't look big 12 ready

Year two was an anomaly with Royce playing the role of primary ballhandler. Year three Bubu contributed around 10-15 minutes per game. There's a chance that maybe Custer gets nothing more than spot minutes this season but it's way too early to write him off. I just think that by season's end he'll have found his way enough to earn some minutes as Monte's primary backup. Time will tell.

A little early to show that, but I would think this is most likely too.

Guessing that four starting spots will be Morris, BDJ, Niang, and McKay.

Hogue, Nader, and Long (hell, maybe Thomas if his offseason was as good as some have said) could compete for the last starting spot, although it won't matter much as the minutes will be distributed pretty evenly I would guess. I can't imagine not starting Hogue though, but if Fred wants to go smaller and bring in some size off the bench then it would make sense.

I agree that redshirting will be rare going forward, and certainly isn't an option for these two kids. However, I think SDW will play an important role before he's through.

As in freeing up a scholarship to get another transfer this spring?

Why wouldn't you want Custer and Tsalm getting garbage minutes? I would argue 5 minutes in a game is better than an hour at practice.

And you know, if someone goes down or gets fouled out, it's nice to have a backup who's actually played **cough** Sam Richardson **cough** **cough**

Redshirting isn't in a player's best interest, unless there aren't other options available. Like say a coach says we will put you on scholarship if you are willing to redshirt and there are no other scholarship alternatives. Redshirting takes a player's ability to transfer away - if you redshirt then decide to transfer, you don't get your redshirt year back. So i can't see any program telling a kid that he must redshirt, and being viewed favorably. If someone voluntarily wants to redshirt (SDW), that's a different story.

If Fred can get a team to play without a pg he can get this one to play without a true back-up. Bubu was a capable backup as a junior and would have played in Game 1 and 2. Too bad he missed half the year. It is simple- if Custer is not capable, he will not be a rotation guy. I can see why there is some doubt.

Agreed. When you look at the facts, there's plenty of reason to think he'll get more time.

-freshman PG who misses the first couple weeks of practice due to illness

-we have no other back up PG.

-we've only played two games, the first was close until the end. The second was against a really talented team.
