I tend to agree with you.

Maybe it's because I want to see something "new" but I couldn't care less if we played Iowa.

I figured with all the realignment happening that after 2025 we wouldn't play them.
I've beat this drum for a while now, but I would like a 2 on 2 off set up. Best of both worlds.

Hard to imagine either team scheduling other teams consistently enough that generate as much in-state and national hype as this one does. I get why both AD'S keep extending even if some fans have had enough.

Why are you playing @Ohio, Arkansas st, and bowling green? Do you still have to pay them if you go to their place? Looking at that non con I can see wanting to dump Iowa to get something flashier but I don’t see why you can’t have a better home/away series then against G5 teams.

Fine. Go down to a second tier of P5 and still better than a field position "slugfest" against the Ferentzes These two teams and coaches know each other too well and play the same exact way against each other. It's not fun.

I would rather play Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Purdue, etc if the requirement is to keep it close to home. So many more interesting games out there. Every year is Scrub #1, Iowa, Scrub #2 (or UNI - another barn burner), then Big12 conference. The only times we get to play a non-Iowa, non-B12 P5 team is in a bowl game.
I would rather plays those occasionally too but that group of teams is way the hell different than the first group you mentioned.

Agree that $$$ will drive this decision.

Related: does the new playoff format impact the Iowa game scheduling decision? 3-0 in the non-conference might be a requirement for a team like ISU to be considered. Sucks - but we've clearly had trouble beating Iowa.

Side note: I am all for cancelling this game, or going to a 2 on 2 off.

I would like to see Minnesota again. I enjoyed it when we did a home and home in the early 90's.
Same here. Except the Gophers bagged out on us and never came to Ames.

good question

no different than visiting Akron a few years back.

I've noticed more P5 teams doing these home/home series with MAC type teams, though.

I would be fine dumping UNI off the schedule too. That game is always way too close for my comfort. If you are gonna schedule a Non P5, lets get someone that actually sucks at FB.

Money. Don't have to pay them if you give a return visit.

I don't mind it if it is a destination type game. UNLV, San Jose St, etc.

These matchups all sound well and good but those teams have to want to actually play these metaphorical matchups.

Also wanting to see the teams you mentioned in your first post play in Ames is one helluva pipe dream and this latest group you have no chance at until almost 2040.

Best I can see out there is Northwestern in 2028; I am sure people will be beating down the doors for that game.

That makes some sense. If you just scheduled another P5 opponent you wouldn’t have to pay either but having Iowa and another P5 could get rough some years.

College football diehards tend to overthink this.

They might be like, "Oh, wouldn't a regional matchup with a neighbor like Wisconsin be cool! That would be something different from playing the stupid Hawkeyes every season!"

(1.) The Big Ten (West) is full of plodding programs. Just more Iowa in another jersey.

(2.) Nobody is going to care about a matchup with a "regional rival" that in all likelihood Iowa State hasn't played at all since roughly 1900 (save the fluke against Minnesota in a bowl game in 2009).

Normie fans will show up for Iowa. They're not going to care about Illinois.

Diehards in all fields need to relearn how to think like normies.

You would think the Big 12 is going to stay at 9 conference games if we've extended this contract, too.

Most SEC schools don't even play 10 P5 opponents.

The arrogance of them refusing to play us was maddening. Both programs needed a shot in the arm and playing each other would obviously be a huge event. But Iowa still refused. And it filtered down to most other sports too.
They did not want to play us back then, because they stunk, too.

There's nothing to better describe Iowa's phony elitism than thinking that there are high level SEC schools, or even Notre Dame, lining up to schedule a home and home with them.

Some people pay a lot of money for drugs so they can detach from reality for a bit. Other people make their own meth and become Iowa fans. To each their own.
