It's 100% both. It's so damn frustrating how close we've come. Honestly, I think the most frustrating thing was 2021. I get that 2017-2019, you were rebuilding and we were doing a damn good job of it. Three straight bowl games, two of which were against top 12 teams that were very good. 2020 you have a historical year and win the Fiesta Bowl and you have an opportunity to prove that it wasn't a blip because you bring everyone back. Then you lay an egg. Then in 2022, the wheels fall off.

What I do love is that Matt didn't get complacent. He made the changes that were needed and now we get to see if those changes net positive results. So far, they have. Our special teams looked night and day better and even if that's the only thing that monumentally changes this year, it'll yield positive results because it'll take the load off of our offense many times. I wish these changes could've been made 3 years ago, but here we are. I'll take them now.
I want to be optimistic, but unfortunately being a die-hard ISU fan for 25+ years, history tells me to chill because eventually something will happen. I will say, it is super encouraging to see us be competitive. I agree, it was good to see Matt make changes. I think any educated UI fan will tell you part of the problem with KF is his reluctance to make any changes whatsoever. If we win tomorrow, I honestly believe we will flirt with a 4-0 start

Living out of state, I don't hear a lot away from this board, but the little bit of chatter I'm hearing from the few Hawkeye fans I know, is reminding me of the 2005 game. Then it was all Drew Tate and how ISU couldn't stop him. This year it's all about Cade and how ISU can't stop him.

There are certainly a lot of reasons ISU could lose this game, but I don't think Cade torching our Defense is going to be one of them.

I cant tell if that is promising or aggravating. Little of both?
I think it is a feature or side effect of the type of system that we have to play here to be consistently competitive. Playing solid defense and ball control offense to keep in the game with nearly anyone. Unfortunately, you also sometimes stay close with teams that you should beat more easily, and they rise up and get you.

Went back and looked at the tweet I was referencing. I had it wrong.

ISU is 6-19 under Matt Campbell in games with a spread b/t -4 and +4 at kickoff
Having trash special teams probably explains a lot of that. Left a lot of points and hidden yardage on the field in CMCs tenure.

People have said Cade is going to torch our defense?

No, no one said literally he is going to torch our Defense. But the few conversations I've had, as I said above, was that Hawkeye fans believe this guy is unstoppable. The Torch was from me, it was a little hyperbole to emphasize the fact that I believe there are a lot of ways ISU could lose this game, but I don't think Cade McNamara will be the main reason.

And my main point was being that this is the first time, since 2005, I remember any Iowa fan telling me there is no way they can lose solely because of their QB. They didn't say anything about their Defense, running back, receivers or special teams, just that Cade is the man.

Cade Mcnamara is a fine P5 quarterback. What's strange to me is the level of hype he gets from Iowa fans. They landed a quarterback -- who was a backup at a conference rival -- and act like they pulled in Sam Hartman.
Wait till his ass gets pancaked a few times and he'll wish he was a backup at his old school again.

In 20 18 we played Oklahoma within one score for most of the game. That Kyler Murray offense was lightyears better than Iowa. If we execute on offense and special teams, we win the game. Bif "if" though.

They are all in on this guy being a heisman finalist. I honestly think part of is it because they've never really used the transfer portal in football or basketball. So they heard a Michigan QB was transferring to Iowa, and it made them tingle.

Iowa is going to take 3-5 shots downfield. How we defend those will dictate if we win or lose imo

How we defend the run will decide whether we win or lose IMO. They did throw downfield a surprising amount last week. Looks like they had 7 attempts that were 20+ yards. I don't think they'll complete any against us though.

Obviously nothing is guaranteed, however the fact that they could only muster 88 yards against USU makes me feel a little more positive about our chances to stop them

I always try to not take much away from week one. I remember back in '09 watching Iowa struggle to run the ball against UNI week 1(2.8 YPC) then in week two run for 191 yards on us. Obviously a different time though.

I haven't heard a single Iowa fan talking Cade up since he hurt his leg a few weeks back. This has been the quietest Iowa fans have been in a LONG time during CyHawk week.

OK, good for you. I'm not sure how much more I can point to my experience being anecdotal than what I said in my post. "Living out of state, I don't hear a lot away from this board, but the little bit of chatter I'm hearing from the few Hawkeye fans I know,"

Yep. And if you remember correctly, Tate got knocked out of that game with a concussion. I'm certainly not wishing for an injury to anyone, but knowing Cade's injury status, and hopeful Iowa St can put pressure on him, I can see a similar scenario tomorrow.
