To be fair, I mostly talk to academic types. I once met a PhD student at UW who had lived in Madison for 7 years and didn't know the difference between the packers and badgers

There's plenty of 'T-shirt' Badger fans for sure.

Now at bars when I used to go watch games I had to repeat 'I-O-WUH STATE' a couple of times to bar tenders because they automatically thought I was asking for Ohio State.

I told someone at work in Madison that it was the Cy-Hawk game. blank stare haha. Most people in Madison have heard of Hawkeyes and never heard of the cyclones. If you say "Iowa State, 50/50 chance they say "oh, the Hawkeyes?"
It's "Iowa-Iowa State" to me. I don't think a ton of fans call it CyHawk.

But I hear ya, it's always a 50/50 shot whether someone says "Hawkeyes?" when I say I went to Iowa State.

I live out of state, and there are plenty of people who either have no clue that Iowa has 1, let alone 2 big universities. And if they do know that, they can't grasp that Iowa and Iowa State aren't the same school.

I've met plenty of people that know about ISU and think Ames is a nice place etc. but most are clueless about hardly any teams outside of the B1G region and (understandably) have no idea about Cyhawk.
My doctor, who went to Northwestern and Michigan, couldn't have possibly been more unintentionally condescending about Ames. She said she took her daughter for a school visit and was blown away.

"It's like a real town! We were surprised to find ethnic restaurants, and the campus is beautiful" lol

She meant well, but those Big 10 types live in a bubble

Sounds like going into it, she was secretly disappointed her daughter couldn’t manage better than ISU.

One of my high school buddies did the same combo for undergrad and law school, and is currently in a big state’s attorney general’s office, and I get the same vibes from him.

Even though all three of his very intelligent high school girlfriends went to ISU. ;)
