I know that there has been frequent criticism of the ISU Marching Band on this site, but here is something we should all be proud of.
Published on May 30, 2016.

On Memorial Day, members of the France Band had the opportunity to participate in the Ames Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony with the Ames Municipal Band.

In just a few days, members of the Cyclone Marching Band's select France Band will travel to Normandy, France, to participate in ceremonies honoring American World War II veterans and to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the D-Day landing.

The students will perform at the Omaha Beach Cemetery, as well as in the town square of St. Mere Eglise, as part of the Salute to Liberation. Other notable performances will occur at the American Cemetery at Brittany and in the D-Day Memorial Parade.

The Iowa State University Cyclone Marching Band was chosen as the only American musical ensemble to participate in this incredibly prestigious ceremony and will be representing not only the state of Iowa, but our entire United States of America. The band was chosen through a competitive application process, and its selection was based upon the excellence and tradition of the entire band program at Iowa State University.

I've never seen that criticism, so maybe I'm not in the right forums of CF to see it. What do people say about them? Keep it clean. I'm asking because my son wants to attend ISU and be in the marching band.

That does look like a cool honor, by the way.

I don't think it is the marching band that gets criticism, it's the basketball pep band and their embarrassing chants.

It's mostly a bunch of grouches and cool guys high-fiving each other for making fun of the nerds. If your son is interested in auditioning for the band when he goes to school he should go for it and not give a **** what a bunch of anonymous jokers on CF have to say about it. I had a bunch of fun, never had to pay for a ticket, and got to travel to a bunch of bowls, away games, and tourneys I'd have never gone to without band.

Back on the main topic, this really is a cool honor for the band. I'm glad they were able to raise enough money to go, I know the costs were higher than anticipated and it looked dicey for a bit.

That is pretty cool and a great honor for them. I was part of the band that was selected to perform in the London New Year's Day Parade 2000. It was an unbelievable experience.

I think those that criticize the band here, just criticize it because it's the band. ISU has long had a very strong marching band we all should be proud of.

That would make sense. I agree, the pep band chants are downright embarrassing. Thanks for the input.

I have yet to understand why anyone is embarrassed by these. Are they incredibly corny, sure, but far from embarrassing.

Very cool to have ISU represented at this. Been to all of those places mentioned just before the 50th anniversary with my dad who was part of the invasion.

I dropped off my kid in Ames today to leave for France tomorrow. They have some rehearsals tonight and early tomorrow morning, then they take some buses up to Minneapolis tomorrow to leave for Paris.

I wish I was going to watch them, but couldn't swing taking the whole family. I'm jealous of them.

Anyone making fun of band is a complete tool. What is there to make fun of? Because they are really talented and can play a musical instrument? Sure beats those kids like me in college who just got drunk all the time and did nothing. My kid will be marching in the D-Day Parade in Normandy, visiting Omaha Beach, performing at the American Cemetery, performing at the Eiffel Tower, and going to the Louvre.

That's 10x more than I ever did in college, and my kid has only been in college at ISU for one year. Who knows what else they will get to do in the next 3 years. Amazing.

Congratulations on being chosen. Should be a great trip. I'll echo the fact that I don't ever recall any criticism of the marching band.

Is it too late to make a donation for the trip? I've been going to ISU football games for 40 years and the marching band has never disappointed me. This trip is a great experience for these kids.
