+1 for the article. -1,000 for the thread title! You scared me that he'd gotten arrested or something!

Re: Dane Pestano

Great article thanks for posting buf. I know I've said it before but it's worth repeating. I absolutely love watching Dane on the mat. If our entire team had the mentality and heart he has.....

I let other post the negative stuff, so if you see a thread started by me, it is probably good. I will try to do better though

I sat in front of his parents at the open tournament. His mom gave my 6 yr old daughter the flower from her hair at the end. Great family, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

I wouldn't be too upset to see Pestano wrestle out the remainder of the season. Downey's question mark looms bigger with each passing day. Its nice that Dane is such a pleasant surprise.

Yeah I'm really torn at this point. If Downey is head and shoulders above Dane then obviously he needs to be out there but on the other hand, Dane has proven himself and has already shown he can get the job done. Tough call.

I'll feel bad for Dane if he loses the spot to Downey. But right now I consider Dane to be an NCAA qualifier who might win a match or even go 2-2 if he gets a decent draw. So if Downey can beat him out that means Downey is at least on the level of a Weatherspoon or Moreno and can be expected to score us at least a handful of points in New York.

If they're both at the same level though I'd prefer to go with Dane since he's been on the mat for us all season and unlike Downey he'd probably get a wild card if Big XIIs don't go well.

Yeah, I would think Downey would have to steal someone else's berth at Big 12 tourney. If Dane earned one himself, I would have a hard time taking that away from him.

And only ranked guy left on schedule at 184 is Boyd of Ok State.

I think many overestimated the impact Patrick Downey would have to our lineup. I think he is likely an improvement, but IMO he was not going to walk in and be a serious AA contender. Especially considering how deep 84 is this year. Most juco champs do not translate to NCAA AA's the first year. I don't think Downey would be an exception to this theory.

For me I think I did overestimate his impact. But mostly because I didn't expect Pestano to be much more than a warm body. My hope for Downey was that he'd qualify and win a couple matches, maybe hit the R12. At this point that's only 1-2 matches further than I'm hoping for Pestano. And on the backside that's only a 1 team point difference.
