Big thing I'm looking to see today is where Gadson tops out. He beat the #15 ranked guy pretty handily and then lost a nailbiter to the #2 ranked guy. He opens today against Derek Borlie of Virginia Tech, who is unranked but upset the #17 ranked wrestler earlier in the tournament. A win there would assure him a spot in the top 8 and most likely put him up against Hudson Taylor, a post-grad who was a 3 time All American and was seeded third.

Moreno gets Conrad Polz from Illinois, who is ranked #8. Moreno beat him in the finals of the UNI Open a few weeks ago but I have a feeling Polz will be much more prepared this time. Moreno doesn't have much to lose but a second win over an AA caliber guy would be huge.

Mikey England opens up against the six seed, John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo, ranked 17th. Weatherman gets the seven seed, Bryce Hammond of CSU Bakersfield, who is unranked by Intermat and ranked 20th by D1Wrestling. If they both get wins they'll face each other in the next round. Which would be an ideal way to figure out who will be the starter going forward.

Can someone give me a quick rundown of how we are sitting? I spent yesterday following the Clash.

Goettl and Beard crashed and burned, Gibson got a concussion. Everyone else went to their seed. Had three matches against top five guys that we were in until the end but lost by a takedown or less.

So at this point we have 3 starters out with concussions (4 if you count Spangler) and another one who is recovering. That's half the lineup with bonked heads.

Great wins by Kyven! If he wrestles like this in March he'll be an AA for sure.

My biggest concern right now is that we are losing a lot of points from takedowns/escapes at the end of periods. The past few years our guys have all wrestled at or above their abilities, but the talent just wasn't always there. This year we finally have the talent in place but other than a handful of guys (Molina, Moreno, Gadson) we aren't consistently wrestling at the level we are capable of. I expected a lot more out of Finch, Goettl, Beard, and Gibson than we've seen so far.

We didn't have two of our starters and another injury defaulted out, but unfortunately yes. That is where we are at and I don't think there is any other way to spin it.

Personally I am lowering my expectations. Hope Gadsen continues to improve and can place. After that I do like what I see from Molina, Moreno and I think both 74s wrestled decent this weekend. Wish they could have beat Hammond and Cannon, need to get those types of wins to make strides.

It looks like we have no winners at any matches below 157. Any hope in lower weights?
