i have a slightly older HD DVR (HR23) in my basement and i'm able to record 2 shows at the same time. That receiver has 2 lines coming into it from the satellite.

My two buddies say they have HD DVRs too, don't know the models, but they tell me they only have one line coming in and are able to record 2 shows at the same time too.

do i need 2 lines coming in?

I don't know much about it, but I think they prefer to use the two wire system, but, like in the case of my house, I only had a spot for one wire coming out of the wall so they use a different one wire setup.

They have a solution now that can do 1 line to the box and use both tuners. If you already have 2 lines ran and working, probably best to leave it as is, but if you only have 1 line, may be worth a call.

If you have an older system you do. If you have a new "SWiM" system you only need one line. Here's a link to their tech forums where you might find your answer.

PS: Their new DVR coming in 2012 records up to five channels at once from one line coming in so if you decide to upgrade you might wait until you can get that system. Feeds your entire house from one unit and holds up to 800 hours of recorded programming.
