If we are talking strictly on merit as a solo artist, then no. The Beatles will always hang over his head, but it's tough to deny that he isn't one of the most famous rock stars alive, so in that respect, maybe just on fame alone. Kind of like what Elizabeth Taylor was to acting. She had a spectacular early career, but for the last 30 years of her life or so, she was just known for being famous.

So I guess I am kind of torn, "Hall of Fame" does indicate more a level of being well known than actual rock accomplishment.? I definitely lean towards the idea that being part of the Beatles is really all he needs. He didn't do much to impact "Rock" after the Beatles were done. He was popular for being Ringo, not a great artist.

The Hall of Fame does delineate between solo and band careers. He was already in as a member of The Beatles. He was just inducted as a solo artist (the last Beatle to get in as an individual.) If you ignore his career with the Beatles, there is just no way his career as a solo artist merits entry. IMO it seems like a pity vote.

There's a lot of undeserving people in there.

As with many halls of fame, membership rarely seems selective enough. Because far as the physical building, in rock n roll hall case, and historic inclusion, just about everyone whose work mattered is contained there. Maybe list of inductees Doesn't have to be so extensive.

Yeah, I agree with you, I guess I was just playing devil's advocate to spark some discussion. On paper, as a solo artist, no, he does not belong. I actually just went through the list of inductees from the time the hall started and by far, he's probably the least deserving on a solo basis.

As a member of The Beatles, for sure. As a solo artist? I don't believe so.

Thoughts?

Even speaking as a Beatles die-hard, I say no.

He had a couple years after the breakup when he was as steady as the other Beatles for pop hits, obviously with less pressure than the others, especially John and Paul. But -- what's truly notable since then?

An some glaring omissions. Cheap Trick has yet to be suggested. Cheap Trick!
I'm a big Cheap Trick fan as well. As a fan, I love their attitude of "we'll play for anyone, anywhere, anytime" (I've seen them probably 10 times in venues large and very small) but it almost seems that same accessibility has lessened their appeal to the masses. Just one man's opinion.

Are they still doing their Sgt. Pepper's show in Vegas? I heard that was awesome but I couldn't convince my wife to go when we were there a few years ago.

Ringo's biggest claim to fame post-Beatles is that he played on solo projects for the other three. The fact that he maintained a great relationship with all three straight through the Beatles on says a lot about him.

He was on Plastic Ono Band and All Things Must Pass. The two best solo Beatles albums. Those two albums are radically advanced artistically to just about everything in the 4+ decades since and Ringo is the drummer on them. In some ways they're both more interesting than most Beatles recordings.

His two best solo songs (It Don't Come Easy and Photograph) were basically George Harrison songs given by a great friend, which speaks further to how GH was actually underrated as a solo artist.

If this were an actual Beatles, Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison thread I'd be gagging that it turned into a Cheap Trick thread. But because it's a Ringo solo career thread I'll let it slide.

No but there are others that don't belong also. The Rock Hall is running out of acts to put in at this point.
